The Ministry of Interior has launched a Twitter account to keep the parents of detainees arrested in connection with national security cases updated on their status.
The initiative was taken in a bid to counteract rumors circulating on some social media sites.
Experts managing this account will respond to all inquiries with full transparency.
A link will also be available on the same account (called the “tawasol window”) to facilitate communication between detainees in prison and their parents via voice and video chat.
The link will also provide other electronic services, such as filing applications for visits or for the temporary release of detainees for family events, such as attending a family wedding or funeral.
The link allows electronic communication between prisoners and their parents and lawyers.
The tawasol window announced that there are more than 2,700 users via its Twitter account.
Authorities said that the window, a national project to link detainees with their parents, is the first service of its kind worldwide.
Through the service, the parents of detainees can continuously check up on their imprisoned children, their health condition and other situations.
The electronic service also offers an easy way to define the time and date that visits take place. Applicants requesting a visit can get a notification on its approval via SMS. Videoconferencing between detainees and parents will be conducted with full privacy.
