A team of 10 Saudi water engineers, headed by Waleed Al-Suhail, GM, environmental service department at NWC Manfouha Riyadh, participated in a one week study and business tour of Japan for sludge treatment and recycling technologies, organized by Japan Cooperation Center for the Middle East (JCCME) from May 25-31.
On day one, the mission visited the eco-friendly Kasai wastewater treatment plant in Tokyo, where the latest facilities of solar power generation systems, NaS (sodium-sulfur) batteries and micro-hydro power generation systems are installed.
After the explanation of the flow diagram of wastewater and sludge treatment by Yamada, professional engineer (sewage) and director at the WWTP, Bureau of Sewage, Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the mission members visited both north and south plants. They witnessed the technical features of the plant that had PFBI (pressurized fluidized bed incinerator) with turbocharger.
The system brought Tokyo the reduction of CO2 gas emission by reducing electricity and fuel consumption.
The technical discussion was followed by Al-Suhail’s presentation on NWC activities, particularly, the feature of Manfouha WWTP.
On day two, the mission participated in the 2-day study (lecture and presentations) and business tour at the Environmental Planning Bureau, the City of Yokohama (a local municipality).
This tour was especially coordinated by the City of Yokohama (YC) and Yokohama Water Co. Ltd. (YWC, a 100 percent subsidized company by YC) for the mission.
On day three, the mission members visited Nishiya Purification Plant and Hokubu Sludge Treatment Center as part of the 2-day study (lecture) and business tour arranged by YC and YWC.
The mission members visited the water purification plant and learned a conventional method of purification by horizontal flow sedimentation basin, which has been operating there for the last 99 years. They also visited the sludge treatment facility in the site.
On day four, the mission members participated in discussions with Japanese companies and organizations.
