Philippine Vice President Jejomar Binay is more optimistic about resolving the case of Joselito Zapanta, who is on death row in the Kingdom, after having discussions with Prince Talal bin Abdulaziz.
“Now that I’ve spoken with Prince Talal, I’ve become optimistic,” said Binay in an interview with local reporters at the Coconut Palace, his official residence in Manila.
Prince Talal met Binay at the Coconut Palace on Wednesday to discuss various issues, including Zapanta’s case.
“Prince Talal asked for the details of the case,” Binay said, adding that he was previously pessimistic because the victim’s family has been asking for SR4 million as blood money.
Around SR520,000 has been raised so far.
Binay had earlier announced a substantial contribution from President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino lll but declined to reveal the exact amount.
“January is coming to a close, I think he will make it through. Negotiations to reduce the blood money to SR2 million is ongoing with the family,” he said.
He said Prince Talal has always been very kind to Filipinos and that his wife has a keen interest in Philippine history.
