The International Indian School-Dammam (IISD) girls team won the top prize in the Patron’s Medal Quiz India Contest which was held for the first time at the Indian Embassy’s auditorium in Riyadh on Jan. 17.
The team, including Ramasa, Tuba Mohsin and Sree Vidhya, won the rolling trophy, medals and prizes marking their victory among the four teams in the finals. The 1st runner-up position was secured by IIS-Riyadh Boys Team — Mohammad Amin, Richy George and Mohammad Yousuf Salman, while the IIPS-Riyadh (Boys) Lean, Yousuf and Akshay won the 2nd runner-up position and IIS-Buraidah Girls Amal Basima, Swathi Sendhil and Misbah secured the 3rd runners-up position.
Ambassador Rao, and executive secretary of Higher Board and principal in-charge, IIS Dammam, Lt. Col. Julius Rocque congratulated the winning teams, the participants, and appreciated the efforts of the faculty and the quiz organizing committee, Thirunavukkarasu, chairman of IIS Dammam managing committee, members, principal and head of the institution E.K. Mohammed Shaffe.
Rao gave away prizes to the winners. The winner will be felicitated during the Republic Day celebrations to be held at the Indian Embassy on Jan. 26.
The Patron’s Medal Quiz India Contest is an annual event organized under the patronage of the ambassador, who is also the patron of the Indian community schools in Saudi Arabia. The objective of the contest is to motivate students to know about their home country as well as the host country and to provide them an opportunity to enhance their knowledge through competitive spirit. It is also intended to instill a sense of patriotism in students.
The contest was conducted in three stages — quarterfinal, semi-final and final. The quarter and semifinals were conducted at the International Indian School-Dammam in the third week of December 2013. Eighteen teams participated in the quarter final, each school fielding two teams consisting of three boys and three girls from Classes IX to XII.
Top four teams competed in the final contest. The topics for the contest ranged from ancient India, medieval India, Indian national movement, Indian culture and heritage, India since independence, national symbol and insignia, electoral system of India, international relations, India’s foreign policy and relations, five-year plans, sports, Indo-Saudi relations, history and current affairs, awards, and great personalities of India
Rocque was the chief coordinator of the interschool quiz contest.
The organizing committee consisted of Dr. Irfan Wahid (quizmaster), Ahmed Azad, Israr Khan, Ajay Kumar Sharma, Shiyas and Yogesh Tamboli.
