Street cleaners get sweaters to fight cold

A group of Saudi women in Riyadh has launched a campaign to distribute sweaters among street cleaners in the capital to help protect them from the cold.
The round of humanitarian work was conducted by a group of volunteers who distributed 100 sweaters among cleaning workers north of the city.
The volunteers said the step was the first phase of a welfare campaign they recently launched.
Muna bint Nasser Al-Khaledi, director of the women’s section at the Dawa Center in North Riyadh, said: “We want to support cleaning workers who are on duty during the early morning hours.”
Al-Khaledi said that female volunteers also want to provide financial support to cleaners who are the least paid in the Kingdom. “We want to make them realize that they are an important part of the Saudi society,” she said.
The women’s wing that spearheaded the campaign also distributed head covers and gloves, as well as Islamic booklets in different languages among the workers. A number of Saudis and expatriates commended female volunteers for their work.
