Need for GCC union stressed

A GCC parliamentary meeting, which was opened in Kuwait City by Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah, emphasized the importance of transforming the Gulf Cooperation Council into a union to strengthen the six-member body and confront regional and international challenges.
The opening ceremony was attended by Kuwaiti Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah, Saudi Shoura President Abdullah Al-Asheikh, GCC Secretary-General Abdullatif Al-Zayyani and President of Arab Parliament Ahmed Al-Jarwan.
“The ongoing developments in the region have proved that the call made by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah to transform the GCC into a union was need of the hour,” said Khalifa bin Ahmed Al-Dhahrani, president of the Bahraini Council of Deputies, adding that it reflected the Saudi ruler’s farsightedness.
“A number of events have taken place showing changes in stances on the Middle East and Arabian Gulf. It demands from us greater caution and vigilance, taking up responsibility toward our countries and people,” he said.
Al-Dhahrani said the unity of GCC countries was the only way to confront challenges that threaten their security and stability.
