Border Guards foil hashish smuggling bid

Border security forces foiled attempts to smuggle large quantities of narcotic drugs such as hashish across the southern border of the Kingdom with Yemen in two separate operations on Tuesday.
In the first operation, Border Guards seized 21 kg of hashish from a Yemeni national at a mountainous border location in Asir province.
Border Guard patrols also inspected individuals carrying large bags attempting to enter the Kingdom across the mountainous border, Col. Abdullah Al-Hamrani, spokesman of the Border Guards in Asir Province, said. Security patrols also observed that some smugglers used mules to carry narcotic substances across the mountainous terrain, the spokesman said.
In another haul in coastal waters five miles off the Jazan coast, Border Guards seized 392 kg of hashish from a boat heading for the coastal hamlet of Shaqiq.
The spokesman said the smugglers’ boat was surrounded by the Border Guards boats. There were four Yemenis in the boat carrying 392 kg of hashish. The smugglers were arrested and referred for investigation, he said. A 1,800 km fence is being erected along the Saudi-Yemeni border with the aim of putting a stop to smuggling and infiltration across the border. Cameras are also being installed along the fence for surveillance.
