Act now to end Assad war crimes

Saudi Arabia has renewed calls for the international community to take effective decisions to immediately end the fighting in Syria.
The Council of Ministers, chaired by Crown Prince Salman, deputy premier and minister of defense, urged the international community not simply to focus on the issue of chemical weapons in the Syrian conflict.
The statement came as the US, France and Britain pushed for a tough UN resolution on Syria’s chemical weapons, with the ultimate goal of forcing President Bashar Assad from power.
International intervention in Syria must go beyond dismantling the regime’s chemical arsenal, Saudi Arabia said in veiled criticism of a US-Russian deal that has delayed military strikes against Damascus.
The Kingdom emphasized the need to “strengthening international support to the Syrian opposition to enable it to face attacks by the regime, whose obstinacy serves interests of extremist movements.”
The US declared that a UN report into a chemical weapons attack in Syria makes it clear that Bashar Assad’s regime was responsible.
“The information provided in that report that the sarin agent was delivered on surface to surface rockets that only the Assad regime has, makes clear the responsibility,” White House spokesman Jay Carney said.
The White House reaction came after UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon told the UN Security Council that UN experts had found indisputable evidence of chemical weapons use in Syria.
“This is a war crime,” the UN chief said.
UN inspectors have confirmed they found clear and convincing evidence of a sarin nerve gas attack in Syria, adding urgency to moves to neutralize the country’s stock of chemical weapons.
