A researcher at King Saud University (KSU) has developed a device that allows medical professionals to determine sources of bleeding, thus helping to contain life-threatening brain hemorrhaging.
“Dr. Abdullah Khalid Al-Rasheed invented the device, for which he received a US patent in late July through KSU’s Intellectual Property and Technology Licensing (IPTL) program,” Khalid Al-Saleh, an IPTL supervisor, said on Tuesday.
The device is a small medical tube designed to collect cerebrospinal fluid, which allows doctors and nurses to accurately diagnose a patient’s source of bleeding, he said.
Al-Saleh said that the invention is highly significant because of the need to rapidly diagnose different kinds of brain hemorrhaging in order to prevent possible brain damage or death.
He said that diagnosing brain hemorrhaging quickly and accurately contributes to rapid treatment and often leads to successful surgery.
It also provides an alternative method of diagnosis for rare situations since a CT scan may not detect early brain hemorrhaging, leading to a possible misdiagnosis, he said.
Al-Saleh said that the design and construction of the device was carried out at KSU’s laboratories.
