Maid with 95% burns dies

A badly burned Filipina maid died Monday after falling into a coma at the intensive care unit at King Saud Medical City Hospital (formerly Shemesi Hospital) in the Saudi capital.
“When she was brought to the hospital by her male sponsor on Aug. 19, she had burns covering 95 percent of her body, making her barely recognizable,” hospital sources, who requested anonymity, told Arab News.
The sources said the sponsor claimed the victim, 34, allegedly tried to commit suicide for reasons he did not mention. Arab News called the sponsor but he could not be contacted.
The hospital sources also said that the victim, who could barely talk when brought to the hospital, was allegedly found in the bathroom.
“She could barely answer questions from the doctor and nurses, but she managed to say that she was from the province of Mindoro in the Philippines,” they added.
They said that she said she had two children, although she did not mention their whereabouts. She was also unable to say whether she was married.
“After answering a few questions, she fell into a coma,” the sources said, adding that she never regained consciousness after that.
The sources said the incident had been reported to the Philippine Embassy and that a representative from the Assistance to Nationals Unit (ANU) section visited the hospital shortly thereafter. The embassy is coordinating with the police in investigation.
