Candidates are awaiting the announcement of the 21st election for the board of directors at the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI).
For the first time, voting will be done electronically. Nominations were accepted at the beginning of July, when dozens of candidates filed their papers on the last day. A total of 53 candidates are reportedly in the fray. It is the third poll in which women are contesting.
There are nine women candidates. Most of the candidates that Arab News spoke with said they want to see changes in the proper functioning of the JCCI, one of the most prestigious and leading business bodies of the Kingdom.
There has been a tide in the affairs of women in the Kingdom, candidates said, and they not only want to take full advantage but also contribute to society, the community and the country with their talents and strength.
There have been allegations about members who allegedly bought votes to get elected on the outgoing board. Some board members had missed as many as three consecutive meetings without explanation. Members have suggested expelling absentee members.
Some members said there should be a mixture of youth and experience, the former bringing enthusiasm and the latter stability. They said that the contest between young and old should not be seen as a clash but as a form of healthy competition.
