More than 600 Burmese inmates have recently been released from general prisons, reformatories and deportation centers in Makkah. Charges against them mainly related to their illegal residency permits or involvement in criminal acts.
Another 200 Burmese prisoners facing deportation order would also be released after their cases are reviewed. A source said that 13 of the released prisoners were women and another was found to be a Bangladeshi national.
An official source from the committee assigned to the Burmese community said that 15 Burmese men were found wanted for criminal offenses.
More than 175,000 Burmese have legalized their status since the process began on March 23 and 600 cases are pending further investigation. Pending cases are expected to rise to 3,000 when the committee’s task comes to an end.
Nearly 250,000 Burmese nationals currently reside in the Kingdom.
