A 27-year old Saudi man suffering from extreme obesity with a weight of 250 kilograms underwent a surgical operation at King Fahd Medical City in Riyadh recently.
Doctors said the operation was successful, adding that it would help reduce his weight by 60 to 70 kg within six months. Dr. Ayed Al-Qahtani, consultant laparoscopic surgery and obesity and head of the medical team treating the man, said various specialists had checked the patient’s health condition since he was admitted to the hospital.
“Surgery was carried out within an hour and was successful and there were no side effects,” he said.
Al-Qahtani said about 80 kg has been removed from the man’s stomach. “This will help reduce his weight by another 60 to 70 kg within six months.”
“His condition is good and stable and he is now undergoing a rehabilitation program, which will be carried out with the support of his family,” Al-Qahtani added.
The man has been suffering from this disease since the age of 5, a doctor at the hospital said. He cannot walk and uses a wheelchair for movement.
The hospital had given priority for the young man’s treatment considering his worsening health situation. “We have also acquired some special equipment for the treatment of such obese patients,” the doctor said.
Al-Qahtani emphasized the need to carry out quick surgery on such patients to avoid complications and for good results.
