Brotherhood’s defiance

The Muslim Brotherhood should respect the will of the people. They should understand that the Egyptians have now rejected them and their agenda. Unfortunately, their stubbornness is creating unrest in the country and so far many people have been reportedly killed in the violence that followed the protest call from the Brotherhood. They should set an example by calling off these protests so as to save precious lives of their countrymen. It is true that they were given mandate to rule the country but due to their policies they failed in pleasing the masses. It seems that the Brotherhood had assumed the reins of the government without proper homework and without carefully studying the social fabric of the society they had set out to rule.
Egyptians had, only a little time ago, toppled the government of a strongman. How could the Brotherhood think that the masses would again let someone rule them in the same manner? The situation in Egypt is expected to remain volatile for quite some time, as the masses have realized their strength.
On the other hand, opinion makers, intellectuals, religious scholars and other public figures should move in to educate the masses as to how to use this power in a constructive manner. If this does not happen, we could see similar events taking place every now and then. And there are chances that miscreants and demagogues may exploit these sentiments and may hijack such popular uprisings for their own evil designs. It is high time the Egyptian intelligentsia come in the picture to give this public power a direction that could help Egypt get back on the road to progress and the regional peace and harmony remains undisturbed. — Nasir Ahmad, Dammam
