3 held at Yemen border after gunbattle

A Saudi border guard was wounded in a gunbattle with three compatriots who were trying to cross the Kingdom’s southern border illegally into Yemen, a security source said.
A spokesman of the border guards said Thursday’s clash took place when a patrol spotted a vehicle making an attempt to cross the Sharourah sector in Najran.
The patrol came under fire when it chased the vehicle, which hit a sand barrier along the frontier, said the statement.
The three men were eventually forced to surrender, and were now being questioned by authorities, the source said, adding that police seized a machine gun and 11 magazines of live ammunition.
Saudi Arabia’s porous border with Yemen is frequently crossed by smugglers as well as militants seeking to join Al-Qaeda in its impoverished southern neighbor.
