A newly-appointed diplomat at the Bangladesh Consulate in Jeddah has been called back to the Foreign Ministry in Dhaka over an altercation with another officer working at the same mission.
Confirming the information, sources from the consulate said the incident took place on July 1 and it involved Mohammed Jamal Uddin, deputy director of National Security Intelligence (NSI), and Bangladesh Foreign Ministry Assistant Secretary Tanvir Kabir.
“The incident had occurred when one officer called for the identification of another officer since both did not know each other,” sources said.
The sources explained that there was a large number of expatriates had gathered to process documents under amnesty regulations.
“It is nothing but fair to identify the officers in a friendly manner but this has ended up in intimidating each other,” the sources said.
Jamal Uddin, who joined the Jeddah Consulate on May 4 this year as first secretary in the consular department, has been asked to refrain from performing official duties following the incident.
Tanvir and his accompanying team are back in Dhaka after completing their tasks.
