Flour prices have remained constant in 30 years

The Director-General of the Silos and Flour Mills Organization, Walid Al-Khereiji, has said that three million sacks of wheat had been secured in the past few days to meet increasing demand during Ramadan.
The move comes in the wake of higher consumption during Ramadan and the high influx of pilgrims, besides the approaching Haj season, he said.
“The grain silos are working throughout the week to meet the increasing demand for flour,” he said, adding that there was an overall increase of about four to five percent taking into consideration seasonal demand and population increase.
Some people have tried to take advantage of the season’s demand and have hoarded wheat to artificially raise the price, but these attempts have been thwarted and the perpetrators arrested, thanks to cooperation between the organization and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
Al-Khereiji said the price of flour hasn’t changed in 30 years and that the market is saturated and added that the quantities distributed have not been fully withdrawn.
Al-Khereiji said the quantum of wheat received from local farmers this year reached 800,000 tons according to a decision to restrict wheat farming in the Kingdom by 12.5 percent annually.

The organization strives to meet demand for flour by setting up and operating new mills and increasing the capacity of existing ones.
“The organization gives great priority to new projects and modernizes existing ones,” he said.
