LOME, Togo: Togo's government announced that the legislative election due to be held July 21 will now take place July 25, a delay meant to address the concerns of the country's increasingly vocal and united opposition. In a statement read Tuesday on state TV, the government said the much-delayed poll is being rescheduled to hold a free, fair, transparent and violence-free election.
Candidates are vying for 91 seats in the next Parliament. More than 3 million voters are registered. The small African nation of Togo has been ruled by the same family for 46 years, first by Eyadema Gnassingbe, then by his son Faure Gnassingbe.
