The Consulate General of Pakistan in Jeddah will start free renewal of machine readable passports (MRPs) that have expired or have six months validity. The validity of the passports will be extended for another five years.
Those who have already applied for renewal of their passports but have not received them can get a one-year extension on their existing MRPs without any payment. This will be done manually, a source at the Pakistani Consulate said.
An amount of SR 40 was charged for a one-year extension on the machine readable passport.
Delivery of machine readable passports has been erratic since December because of shortage of leaflets in Islamabad. Those who had applied had to wait for several months to get new passports. The situation has improved recently and the new measures are aimed at addressing the issue.
