Female artists win Sony competition

Three Saudi female artists won top prizes and certificates of appreciation for their outstanding work at the Sony Creative Challenge Competition held to design a Sony World shopping bag.
Modern Electronics Company Ltd. (MECL), a subsidiary of the Al-Faisaliah Group, and Sony, the leading consumer electronics manufacturer, announced the winners of the competition at a special awards ceremony at the L’art Pur Gallery in Riyadh on Monday.
Prince Mohammed bin Khaled Abdullah Al-Faisal, president and CEO of Al-Faisaliah Group, gave the awards to the winners, who were chosen from among 107 contestants.
Bader Al-Swailem, managing director of MECL/SONY, and Kazuteru Makiyama, director of sales and marketing MECL/SONY, were also present at the awards ceremony.
Speaking to the press, Prince Mohammed explained that the selection was made by an independent jury. Members of the jury were conversant in the field of aesthetic studies.
The top spots were awarded to only three designs, one of which was selected by a jury, the other was determined by public votes or Facebook ‘likes’, while the Sony World retail design prize was selected by a Sony World jury team.
This Sony World jury-selected design will also be printed on a limited edition Sony World branded shopping bag to be distributed by Sony World at its retail outlet stores soon, the prince said.
All the designs were judged for the technical skill, artwork and originality of the entry.
The winner of the independent (external) jury’s recommendation was Alyaa Mohammed, who got a Sony Digital Camera model NEX-F3, while the Facebook audience favorite, based on highest number of likes, was Fatimah Ahmed Al- Gharrash, who walked away with a Sony Digital Camera model NEX 5N. The third winner, from the Sony World (internal jury recommendation), M.S. Nawaal, also got a Sony Digital Camera model NEX-F3.
The Sony Creative Challenge is an initiative that provides a platform for talented youths in the Kingdom to express themselves and showcase their creativity and innovative design skills. This initiative will be promoted using social media and will coincide with Sony World Retail Store’s activities during the year.
The competition will be held on a quarterly basis. “The Sony Creative Challenge is a social media driven, artistic contest that is open to all creative artists who are either citizens of the Kingdom or legal expatriates,” Prince Mohammed said.
