The Jeddah mayoralty is conducting an inspection campaign around the clock to check on the more than 350 barbershops in the city that offer massage and bathing services, Abdalaziz Al-Nahari, spokesman for the mayoralty, said. The reason for the campaign, Al-Nahari said, is to implement the recent decision taken by the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs banning barbershops from offering massage and bathing services to customers and requiring them to stick to haircuts.
The reason behind the decision, he said, is that massage and bathing services, of which Moroccan-style shops are the most common in Jeddah among Saudi youth, should be restricted to sports and fitness and health centers.
