New traffic campaign launched in Riyadh

The Riyadh Traffic Department has launched a new traffic campaign aimed at monitoring erroneous parking practices at places where such cases mostly occur.
The first stage of the campaign, supervised by the Higher Committee for Traffic Safety in Riyadh, is being implemented along King Abdullah Road, from its intersections with King Abdulaziz Road (east) to King Khalid Road (west). The campaign will later extend to include other roads and streets in Riyadh city which are witnessing high rates of similar erroneous traffic practices that are hampering traffic flow in the city, the organizers said.
The campaign falls within the strategy of traffic safety in Riyadh being adopted and implemented by the High Commission for the Development of Riyadh (HCDR).
The HCDR and Riyadh Traffic Department have recently finalized the training of a specialized traffic team assigned to monitor erroneous parking practices using the latest technologies and global experiences in this regard.
The training covered a series of areas, notably a strategic plan on how to monitor traffic malpractices, deal with violators and choose appropriate timings for the program (morning and evening shifts) by using foot and mobile traffic patrols.
Last November, the Higher Committee for Traffic Safety in Riyadh announced that it would examine accident hotspots within Riyadh city where traffic incidents occur most regularly in a bid to tackle the deadly cases of such accidents.
According to the Committee’s plan, the work would involve identifying the most dangerous roads in Riyadh before monitoring the number of vehicles to analyze what causes the accidents.
The HCDR will work with the Riyadh Governorate, the Ministry of Transport and the Riyadh Traffic Department on the plan, which will also examine road conditions in terms of surface, lighting, traffic signals and pedestrian interaction.
Saudi Arabia has been identified as one of the most dangerous countries in the world for drivers in terms of the number and severity of road accidents.
