It is said that a proposal was made to Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, urging him to make Arabic the official language of Pakistan. If the proposal was accepted, we would be having a different Pakistan altogether.
Since Arabic is the Qur’anic language, no Muslim would ever oppose and this would have helped the ethnic groups to unite and not hate each other for their linguistic differences.
Beside this compulsory study of Arabic language would also lead a common man to understand Holy Qur’an and Hadith better. Moreover the literacy of Arabic language would bring Pakistan, then the biggest Islamic state, much closer to the Arab world. This demand was not accepted and the hatred of Pakistani tribes on the basis of languages still continues to the extent they do not hesitate to kill each other. The language issue was even used as an instrument to break and destroy Pakistan.
Can those sitting at the helm of the affairs not correct this historic mistake to unite the ethnic groups and give a new dimension to this country? — Hesham A. Syed, Riyadh
