What should have been a celebratory season for 27 people mowed down in one fell swoop in the Connecticut mayhem, of which two thirds were children, is once again a grim reminder of the gun-toting madness that has engulfed the American nation!
The Black Friday pre-Christmas shootings must rank as the worst ever involving the number of schoolchildren killed, reliving the horrors of the Columbine School tragedy a few years ago, and latterly, the late-night shooting at a preview of “The Dark Knight” — illustrating once again the inability of authorities and the Congress, particularly, to enact controls regarding the easy availability of lethal weapons, (AR’s, high caliber pistols, Uzi’s) over the counter!
With guns being a prominent feature in American popular culture, the gratuitous display of violence in today’s films, needs serious introspection — and could be cited as the single most important factor for the gung-ho behavior among US youths (and adults!) — A.R. Modak, Johannesburg
