The Hematology and Blood Stem Cell Transplant Department at the King Fahd Specialist Hospital in Dammam performed 50 successful stem cell transplants since 2010. Of those, 38 were performed on adult patients and 12 on children.
During such a transplant, blood-producing stem cells are injected into a recipient. The treatment is used to treat a number of conditions, including acute or chronic leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma (cancer of the plasma cells in the bone marrow), and a number of immune deficiency disorders.
Dr. Hani Al-Hashemi, hematology and blood stem cell transplant consultant at the hospital, explained that all of the 50 transplants were successful and without any unexpected complications. One of the main reasons for this success is the qualified medical staff and the advanced therapeutic technology at the hospital.
It is the only medical center in the Eastern Province that is specialized in those critical transplants.
