This is in response to the article, “Food prices drop globally but rise in local markets!” by Abdel Aziz Aluwaisheg. The price increase in Saudi Arabia and GCC market is a serious issue and much has been written in the past by several people on this subject, but unfortunately no positive action has been taken to deal with the issue. His worthy analytical points need serious consideration and proper action as it is being experienced by everyone that there has been a dramatically increase in the prices of essential goods in the market without any justification, despite the price decline in the international market.
Unfortunately, some greedy traders have spoiled the market and have no fear of law and respect of the directives issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. They are increasing prices of goods mercilessly as they want without any sound reason. In fact, merchants are taking undue and unjust advantage of the high demand of essential goods in the market by increasing the prices. Ironically, consumers have no other option but to purchase these essential goods for their survival and to fulfill their basic needs.
I fully agree with author’s valuable views. The concerned authorities in the ministry should take legal action against merchants who increase prices unlawfully and should make sure that they are not spared for the violations. — A reader, Riyadh
