Setting an example

Unfortunately, due to the lack of interest on part of the government and weak laws, corruption is becoming a part and parcel of daily lives of Pakistani people. Because of the rampant corruption the country has become a regular feature on Transparency International’s top-10 list. And what’s more worrying is that skeletons keep tumbling out of the cupboard of the government besieged by corruption charges.

The top judiciary is still trying very hard to bring back the black money stashed away in Swiss banks and other financial institutions. In this gloomy scenario one Pakistani cab driver in Dubai set a remarkable example for corrupt politicians and rest of the country too. According to media reports sometime ago, a 26-year-old Pakistani cab driver hailing from a very poor area of Pakistan handed over SR 127,300 and expensive jewelry left in his cab to the police. He was later honored by the UAE police authorities.

The money and jewlery belonged to a businessman who was on a trip to Dubai. The city police acknowledged his honesty and gave him special certificate in a small ceremony. Although this news made only few lines in back pages of some newspapers but this example is worth following and we must appreciate this type of acts of honesty by ordinary people.
