DHAKA: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader says her organization and its 17 other partners will not contest any elections unless the government restores a non-aligned caretaker to oversee the voting.
Opposition leader Khaleda Zia said the government must restore the system or the country would be pushed into uncertainty.
The government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina scrapped the caretaker system last year after the Supreme Court ruled it contradicted the spirit of the constitution. Hasina says there’s no way to restore it.
The election is slated to be held in early 2014. Zia made her comments at a news conference Thursday.
Opposition parties fear the ruling party could rig the results if it were in charge during the voting.
