MANILA: The Philippine ombudsman has filed corruption charges against the former president’s husband and more than a dozen police officers involved in the sale of two used helicopters he allegedly owned and passed off as new.
The charges filed Wednesday against Jose Miguel “Mike” Arroyo, retired national police chief Jesus Verzosa and the others are part of President Benigno Aquino III’s anti-corruption campaign. It follows the ouster of the Supreme Court’s chief justice who Aquino says was an obstacle in his campaign.
Arroyo has denied he owned the choppers. Former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has long denied corruption and claimed she is being persecuted.
The former president has been charged with electoral fraud and detained in a government hospital.
