Afghan dies saving worker from container

JEDDAH: An Afghan national died after apparently inhaling toxic substances in a sewage tank while attempting to save an African worker who fell into the container in south Jeddah yesterday.
The African national, whose condition is said to be critical, was taken to hospital, said Lt. Col. Saeed Sarhan, Civil Defense spokesman for Makkah province.
Speaking to Arab News, Sarhan said the operation rooms at Jeddah Civil Defense received a report a man had fallen into the tank in the Al-Khurma district.
“When our rescue teams rushed to the spot, they found an African man lying unconscious outside the tank and he was taken to King Abdulaziz Hospital in Mahjar.
After searching the tank, the teams found another man trapped inside the tank,” he said, adding that the man was already dead.
According to preliminary reports, the 42-year-old Afghan man was working with a nearby restaurant. When Afghani heard the cries of the African man from the tank, he got in to save the man. Police have started an investigation into the incident.
