HCDR approves implementation of 107-km long 2nd ring road

The Higher Commission for the Development of Riyadh (HCDR) has recently approved the implementation of the second ring road with a length of 107 kilometers.
Implementation of the second ring road will ease traffic flow and minimize movement of heavy trucks on road networks within Riyadh city, according to a survey conducted by the HCDR.
The volume of traffic on the eastern ring road is currently at more than 340,000 cars per day with an increase of 17 percent compared to 2007 figures, according to the survey.
Meanwhile, traffic on the southern and western ring roads is currently at more than 300,000 and 200,000 cars per day with an increase of 10 and 37 percent, respectively, compared to 2007 figures, the survey reads.
The second ring road project is composed of five parts: one extending from Kharj Road (south) to Khurais Road (north) with a length of 26 km; the second is related to upgrading Sheikh Jabir Subah Road to Thumamah Road (11 km); the third part is related to extension of Sheikh Jabir Subah Road intersection with Thumamah Road (south) and its connection with Prince Salman Road and continuity to the road leading to King Khalid International Airport terminals (15 km); development of Prince Salman Road (21 km); and fifthly Kharj Road (east) to Jeddah Highway (west) (42 km).
