LONDON: Syria is rebuilding the Al-Thawra oil field in Raqqa province as part of its reconstruction efforts after the civil war.
The field’s current output is about 2,500 barrels per day, down from about 25,000 barrels per day before the start of the war, the Syrian Arab News Agency reported.
Authorities are repairing damaged wells and restoring oil transport systems, pumping stations and storage tanks.
Energy has become a pressing issue for the Syrian Arab Republic as the conflict between the US, Israel and Iran has disrupted oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, affecting global markets.
Syrian energy officials have sought help and advice from neighboring countries, including Saudi Arabia, to address challenges in the rehabilitation process, such as the shortage of drilling equipment, pumps, electric motors and spare parts.
Engineers are also transferring crude oil from irregular collection pits into regulated storage and transport systems, the report said.
Syria’s oil production ranged from 400,000 to 500,000 barrels per day before the civil war, which lasted from 2011 to 2024. It then decreased to below 100,000 barrels due to infrastructure damage.
