TARTU: Taif, a UNESCO City of Literature, participated in the Cities of Literature Annual Meeting hosted in Tartu, Estonia, from May 9 to 15.

The Saudi city was represented by Ahmed Jameel Haidar, assistant deputy for investment at Taif Municipality, and Abdulaziz Al-Meshari, representative of the Literature, Publishing and Translation Commission.

The meeting served as an international platform bringing together Cities of Literature from around the world to exchange expertise, discuss joint initiatives, and showcase best practices in developing the literary sector and enhancing its presence in public spaces.

The program included internal sessions, best practice presentations, and field visits to key cultural institutions in Tartu, including the Estonian Literary Museum, the University of Tartu Library, and the Tartu Public Library, as well as engagements with local cultural stakeholders.

During the meeting, the Taif delegation explored various international experiences in integrating literature into urban contexts.

The city also presented its “Literary Partner” initiative as a model for effective local partnerships, enabling community entities to design and deliver literary programs and expand access to diverse audiences.

The participation reflects Taif’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its presence within the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, build international cultural partnerships, and further develop the local literary sector while showcasing the city’s literary identity on a global stage.
