JEDDAH: Members of the Saudi-backed Masam Project for Landmine Clearance in Yemen have destroyed 4,076 landmines and other war remnants in Dofas, Abyan governorate.
The operation was carried out on Thursday by the project’s First Special Tasks Team as part of ongoing efforts to clear Yemeni territory of mines, improvised explosive devices and other hazards.
The destroyed items included 219 shells, 3,570 rounds of ammunition, 255 fuses, 12 anti-personnel mines, five anti-tank mines, 11 hand grenades, three rockets and one improvised explosive device.
In a statement, team commander Munther Qassem said the unit responds around the clock to reports from residents and local authorities in Aden, Abyan and Lahj to mitigate the dangers posed by explosive remnants of war.
He added the team had recently responded to a report from Lahj governorate about an explosive device, moving immediately to the site to dismantle it and secure the area.
Masam is continuing its humanitarian work in several liberated Yemeni governorates by removing landmines and war remnants and responding to emergency reports to protect civilians and secure affected areas.
