LONDON: Jordanian authorities intercepted an attempt to smuggle a large quantity of narcotics along the eastern front using electronically directed balloons.
Border Guard forces thwarted the attempt in collaboration with the Anti-Narcotics Department, seizing the drugs, according to Petra news agency.
Last week, authorities arrested multiple drug dealers in a nationwide crackdown amid intensified efforts to protect national security. They seized firearms, drones and remotely guided balloons, along with quantities of narcotic pills, hashish and crystal meth.
Jordan is known as a transit point for smuggling drugs that are typically bound for the Gulf countries from Syria, Lebanon and Iraq. Smugglers are increasingly employing drones and balloons, which are guided by basic devices, to transport narcotics into Jordan from neighboring countries.
