RIYADH: The King Salman bin Abdulaziz Royal Reserve has become the first natural reserve in the Middle East and West Asia to receive the Technical Innovation Certification from the International Union for Conservation of Nature, marking a significant international milestone for Saudi Arabia’s conservation efforts.
The recognition was awarded in acknowledgement of the reserve’s use of advanced technological solutions to protect the environment and enhance biodiversity, positioning it at the forefront of innovation-driven conservation globally.
The achievement follows a strategic collaboration between the reserve and Saudi Telecom Co., implemented through Huawei’s Tech4Nature initiative, to deploy an intelligent monitoring system powered by artificial intelligence and advanced communications technologies.
The system enables highly precise tracking of wildlife through a network of smart cameras capable of real-time monitoring, data analysis and continuous observation of biodiversity. It allows for the immediate identification of species and the tracking of their movements within their natural habitats, supporting scientific research and detailed ecological monitoring.
Officials said the platform also processes large volumes of data to generate actionable insights that support decision-making, strengthening rapid response and intervention capabilities to safeguard natural resources using the latest AI tools.
The certification underscores Saudi Arabia’s growing role in adopting “smart reserve” models that integrate low-carbon, AI-powered monitoring systems in line with the objectives of Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative, officials added.
