AMMAN: An attempt to smuggle drugs into Jordan from Syria was foiled on Sunday, according to state news agency Petra.

A military source said the operation began in the early hours “as multiple groups sought to cross the border, exploiting adverse weather conditions and dense fog.”

One smuggler was killed during clashes with security forces before others retreated into Syrian territory.

The amount of drugs seized has not been disclosed.

War-ravaged Syria has become the region’s main site for mass production of the addictive synthetic amphetamine-type stimulant Captagon. Jordan is a key transit route to the Gulf states, say anti-narcotics officials.
