Guardiola wants close friend Arteta to explain himself after cryptic comments about Man City

Arteta seems certain their relationship won’t be damaged
Guardiola, however, might have gotten irritated

MANCHESTER: The friendship between Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola and Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta could come under strain with the rivalry between their title-chasing Premier League clubs intensifying in recent days.
Arteta seems certain their relationship won’t be damaged.
Guardiola, however, might have gotten irritated.
Arsenal’s tactics, and use of soccer’s so-called “dark arts,” brought some criticism from a number of City players after the feisty 2-2 draw between the teams last weekend.
Arteta responded rather cryptically by saying he has “all the information” about City owing to his time there as an assistant to Guardiola from 2016-19.
“So I know, believe me,” Arteta said.
Those remarks were sufficiently vague for Guardiola to wonder whether Arteta may actually be alluding to the off-the-field issues at City, which are currently defending themselves against 115 charges of breaching Premier League regulations following an investigation into the club’s financial affairs.
“Next time he has to be more clear exactly what does he mean,” Guardiola said of Arteta. “He said he was here four years and we know exactly what happened here.
“It can be related (to) the process now with 115 charges, maybe it’s about that. He knows information about that maybe, or maybe he has something like ... I don’t know. OK, next time, like a good relation I have with him, hopefully this question has been asked. He can answer exactly what does it mean when he said he was here and ‘I know what’s happening here.’“
Guardiola was speaking Friday in a news conference that took place about the same time as Arteta was holding one at Arsenal’s training base.
Asked about his relationship with Guardiola, Arteta said: “I love him, I respect him, I admire him and I admire his team and everything that he does. This is sport. One thing is our profession, another is our personal relationship.
“If our relationship was damaged because one draws and the other one wins or the amount of times that they’ve beaten us, I would not talk to him anymore. So that’s not our relationship, especially the relationship that I consider both of us have. In sport it will never get in my way, a personal relationship, that’s for sure.”
Guardiola said he feels Arsenal might be provoking his players into a rivalry, picking up especially on post-match comments by Arsenal defender Gabriel.
“Gabriel said it perfectly after the match — so this is a war, we are here to provoke the opponent, to push them,” Guardiola said. “At the end what can you do? OK, you provoke me — I’m there. You want a war? I’ll do a war.”
Arsenal have finished runner-up to City in the league the last two seasons.

Lebanese health minister says 11 killed, 108 injured on Friday

Beirut: A new Israeli strike hit a building in Hezbollah’s south Beirut bastion Saturday, a Lebanese security official told AFP, after Israel earlier said it killed group leader Hassan Nasrallah during intense bombardment.
“A new Israeli strike targeted Beirut’s southern suburbs,” the official said, requesting anonymity to discuss sensitive matters.
The strike hit the second and third floors of a building, the official said.
While Lebanese health minister said that 11 killed and 108 injured on Friday in Israeli strikes across Lebanon.
In addition to bombardment on Hezbollah strongholds in Lebanon’s south and east, Lebanon’s National News Agency reported Saturday Israeli strikes outside the group’s traditional bastions, including in the Keserwan area north of Beirut.
Earlier Saturday, Israel’s military announced Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli strike on Beirut the previous night, but there was no confirmation from the Lebanese armed group.
Hezbollah began firing into Israel one day after Hamas’s October 7 attack on southern Israel that sparked the war in Gaza.
But Israel has in recent days shifted the focus of its operation from Gaza to Lebanon, where heavy bombing has killed hundreds and displaced around 118,000.
Continuing strikes on both sides of the border
On Saturday morning, the Israeli military carried out more than 140 airstrikes in southern Beirut and eastern Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley, including targeting a storage facility for anti-ship missiles in Beirut suburb of Dahiyeh. Israel said the missiles were stored underground beneath civilian apartment buildings. Hezbollah launched dozens of projectiles across northern and central Israel and deep into the Israel-occupied West Bank, damaging some buildings in the northern town of Safed.
In Beirut’s southern suburbs, smoke rose and the streets were empty after the area was pummeled overnight by heavy Israeli airstrikes. Shelters set up in the city center for displaced people were overflowing. Many families slept in public squares and beaches or in their cars. On the roads leading to the mountains above the capital, hundreds of people could be seen making an exodus on foot, holding infants and whatever belongings they could carry.
At least 720 people have been killed in Lebanon over the past week from Israeli airstrikes, according to the Health Ministry.

Pakistani authorities call for vaccination amid resurgence of polio
  • Number of cases in Pakistan this year is the highest since 2021
  • Officials are ‘hopeful’ new strategies will stop the virus spreading

KARACHI: The number of polio cases in Pakistan has risen to at least two dozen so far this year, as local authorities urged citizens on Saturday to vaccinate their children against the virus.

Pakistan is one of the only two countries in the world — alongside neighboring Afghanistan — where polio is still endemic.

In 2024, thousands of Pakistani health workers were involved in nationwide campaigns aimed at vaccinating millions of children under five in a state-driven effort to contain the spread of the virus.

But polio has continued to spread across the country, with the number of cases so far this year surging to its highest since 2021.

After health officials reported the first polio case in Islamabad in 16 years earlier this month, the most recent was reported in Sindh province, where local authorities are urging parents and caregivers to vaccinate their children.

“Vaccinate your children to protect them from disability,” Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah said on Saturday.

“There is an urgent need for collective action to eradicate the crippling disease of polio. Every time a new polio case is reported, it causes severe distress. While the world is making strides in development, we have yet to free ourselves from polio.”

Nofil Naqvi, spokesperson for the Emergency Operations Center in Sindh, highlighted that the virus has continued to spread because some children have yet to be vaccinated.

“If every child is vaccinated, it will stop,” Naqvi told Arab News. “We’re implementing several changes in our operations and communication strategies. We are hopeful that we will soon stop this spread, which will lead to the ultimate eradication of the polio virus.”

Polio is a highly contagious and sometimes deadly illness, which once paralyzed hundreds of thousands of children globally each year. Though incurable, it can be prevented through vaccination. After vaccines were introduced in 1955, the number of cases worldwide dropped by more than 99.9 percent.

Pakistan launched the Polio Eradication Program in 1994, after cases were reported to have reached around 20,000 in the early 1990s.

While the number of cases has declined significantly in the last three decades, the nation continues to face challenges. This includes misinformation and militants who attack vaccinators, particularly in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

The polio program also faces continued disruptions from natural disasters, such as the deadly floods that have affected much of Pakistan in recent years.

Indonesian entrepreneurs explore Saudi market at Jeddah trade expo
  • Amazing Indonesia promoted products from the Southeast Asian country
  • A variety of Indonesian businesses, from coffee to fashion brands, showcased their goods

JAKARTA: A number of Indonesian entrepreneurs made their first foray into the Saudi market this week at the Amazing Indonesia Trade Expo in Jeddah.

The event, which ran from Sept. 26 to 28, was organized by the Indonesian Consulate General in Jeddah to promote goods and services from the world’s largest Muslim-majority country.

For Inna Dwi Kurniati, owner of Jakarta-based modest fashion brand Inabee Mukena, it was the first time she has exhibited her products outside of her homeland.

“I’m very happy I can participate at this exhibition in Jeddah,” Kurniati told Arab News on Saturday. “I hope I can continue to participate at international exhibitions so I can introduce Indonesian products to the world.”

The Saudi market offered “good potential” for the business, which she started in 2019, she said.

“We just have to develop it further to fit the Saudi market demand, to offer prayer sets and abayas with designs and cultural considerations that will be acceptable here.”

Sabardi, owner of Aceh-based Ulunowih, which specializes in coffee made from beans from the Gayo highlands, told Arab News: ”As a small business from Aceh, being able to get this chance in Jeddah is a source of pride and an extraordinary achievement. This is an opportunity to introduce local products, such as Gayo coffee, to the international market.”

Gayo beans are a flagship commodity for Aceh, which is Indonesia’s top producer of Arabica coffee.

“This is an experience that adds to my belief that Aceh’s local products have great potential in the international market, especially in the Middle East,” Sabardi said. “This also motivates us to increase our product quality even further to make it more competitive globally.”

The Indonesian entrepreneurs also had the chance to do their own market survey while in Jeddah, visiting other stores and businesses across the city that they could potentially collaborate with.

“I think every small business has their own market, and it’s such a coincidence that Sweet Sundae (matches well with) Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries,” said Yuki Rahmayanti, referring to her ice cream and dairy brand.

“This is a splendid blessing, being able to offer our products directly in Jeddah,” she concluded.

Hamas says Nasrallah ‘assassination’ will only strengthen resistance
  • “Crimes and assassination by the occupation will only increase the determination and the insistence of the resistance in Palestine and Lebanon to go forward,” Hamas said
  • His death marks a heavy blow to Hezbollah as it reels from an escalating campaign of Israeli attacks

CAIRO: Palestinian militant group Hamas said on Saturday it mourned Lebanon’s Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah following his killing in an Israeli airstrike, saying his death would only fuel the fight against Israel.
“Crimes and assassination by the occupation will only increase the determination and the insistence of the resistance in Palestine and Lebanon to go forward with all their might, bravery and pride on the footsteps of the martyrs...and pursue the path of resistance until victory and the dismissal of the occupation,” Hamas said in a statement.
His death marks a heavy blow to Hezbollah as it reels from an escalating campaign of Israeli attacks. It is also a huge blow to Iran, given the major role he has played in the Tehran-backed regional “Axis of Resistance.”
The ‘Axis of Resistance’ refers to groups including Hezbollah that are backed by Iran and have been waging attacks on Israel since war erupted between their ally Hamas and Israel on Oct. 7.
“We reaffirm our absolute solidarity and standing with the brothers in Hezbollah and the Islamic Resistance in Lebanon, who are taking part in the battle of the Al-Aqsa Flood to defend Al-Aqsa mosque, alongside our people and our resistance,” Hamas added.
Islamic Jihad, another Iranian-backed Palestinian group, said in a statement: “Sooner or later, the resistance forces in Lebanon, Palestine, and the region will make the enemy pay the price of its crimes, and taste defeat for what its sinful hands have done.”
Gaza has a population of 2.3 million people, most of whom have been internally displaced by the war, which has killed 41,500 of them, according to Gaza health authorities.
Israel and Hamas have been fighting since gunmen from the Palestinian militant group stormed into southern Israel on Oct. 7, killing 1,200 people and capturing some 250 hostages, by Israeli tallies.
Asked how Nasrallah’s death would affect the fight against Israel, senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri told Reuters: “The assassination of Hassan Nasrallah will not break the will of the resistance and we are confident that the occupation will lose the battle,” said Abu Zuhri.

Pakistan PM discusses expanding trade and investment ties in meeting with President Biden
  • The two leaders had a brief interaction, as Shehbaz Sharif attended a dinner hosted by Biden in New York
  • The PM highlights the ‘common desire’ of the two countries to enhance climate, technological partnership

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the “common desire” of Pakistan and the United States to enhance collaboration in trade, investment and other areas on Saturday after a brief meeting with President Joe Biden in New York.

Sharif was in the US to attend the 79th United Nations General Assembly Session, where he spoke about the war in Gaza, India’s ‘occupation’ of Kashmir, Pakistan’s fight against militancy and its struggle to shore up its economy, among other issues.

He also held several bilateral meetings and attended a dinner hosted last night by the US president in honor of the heads of state attending the UNGA session.

“My brief meeting with US President Joe Biden @POTUS and First Lady Jill Biden during the President’s reception in New York was most warm and cordial,” he wrote in a social media post on X.

“We reaffirmed our common desire to enhance cooperation in key areas including trade, investment, technology, & climate action,” he added.

In recent years, Pakistan has focused on enhancing trade, investment and collaboration in areas like climate and technology, aiming to strengthen its global economic ties.

The US remains Pakistan’s largest trading partner, a cornerstone in these efforts. Despite fluctuating relations, Pakistan has continued to express its desire to broaden and deepen ties with Washington.

The two countries have also collaborated in the security field, with the Washington offering assistance to Islamabad in cou
