Brazil judge threatens to suspend X within 24 hours
  • The decision escalates a months-long feud between Musk and Brazilian Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes
  • In April, Moraes ordered an investigation of Musk, accusing him of reactivating some banned accounts

Brasília: Brazil’s Supreme Court threatened on Wednesday to suspend social media platform X unless billionaire owner Elon Musk names a new legal representative for the company within 24 hours.
The decision escalates a months-long feud between Musk and Brazilian Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes, who has previously ordered the suspension of dozens of accounts on X for allegedly spreading disinformation.
In April, Moraes ordered an investigation of Musk, accusing him of reactivating some banned accounts.
Musk and other critics accuse Moraes of stifling free speech.
In an order made public Wednesday, Moraes ordered Musk “to appoint the company’s new legal representative in Brazil within 24 hours.”
“In the event of non-compliance with the order, the decision provides for the suspension of the social network’s activities in Brazil,” it said.
In response, Musk posted on X that “this ‘judge’ has repeatedly broken the laws he has sworn to uphold.”
Musk shut X’s business operations in Brazil this month, claiming the judge had threatened the company’s previous legal representative with arrest to force compliance with “censorship orders.”
Brazilian users have meanwhile continued to be able to access the social media site formerly known as Twitter.
Moraes, who also presides over Brazil’s Superior Electoral Tribunal, has spearheaded a battle against disinformation in South America’s largest nation, clashing with Musk along the way.
Several of the X accounts he ordered suspended belonged to supporters of Brazil’s former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro, who tried to discredit the voting system in the 2022 election, which he lost.
Musk previously said that if X had complied with Moraes’s orders, “there was no way we could explain our actions without being ashamed.”
Musk is also the subject of a separate judicial investigation into an alleged scheme where public money was used to orchestrate disinformation campaigns in favor of Bolsonaro and those close to him.

UNITED NATIONS: A preliminary investigation by Lebanese authorities into the communications devices that blew up in Lebanon this week found that they were implanted with explosives before arriving in the country, according to a letter sent to the UN Security Council by Lebanon’s mission to the United Nations.
The authorities also determined the devices, which included pagers and hand-held radios, were detonated by sending electronic messages to the devices, says the letter, seen by Reuters on Thursday. Israel was responsible for the planning and execution of the attacks, Lebanon’s UN mission said.
The 15-member Security Council is due to meet on Friday over the blasts.
The attacks on Hezbollah’s communications equipment on Tuesday and Wednesday killed 37 people and wounded around 3,000, overwhelming Lebanese hospitals and wreaking bloody havoc on the militant group.
Israel has not directly commented on the attacks, which security sources say were probably carried out by its Mossad spy agency, which has a long history of carrying out sophisticated attacks on foreign soil.

US says no change to its military posture in Middle East amid attacks in Lebanon
  • “I am not tracking any force posture changes in the Eastern Med or in the Central Command area of responsibility,” Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh said
  • “We’ve never wanted to see a wider regional conflict“

WASHINGTON: There are no changes to US military posture in the Middle East, the Pentagon told reporters on Thursday when asked about recent deadly Israeli attacks in Lebanon that blew up Hezbollah radios and pagers.
Lebanon and the Iran-backed Hezbollah group have blamed Israel for attacks on Hezbollah’s communications equipment that killed 37 people and wounded around 3,000, overwhelming Lebanese hospitals and wreaking bloody havoc on the militant group.
“I am not tracking any force posture changes in the Eastern Med or in the Central Command area of responsibility,” Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh said in a press briefing.
The Pentagon said that any attack that escalates tensions in the Middle East will not be helpful.
“In pretty much every call the secretary always reiterates the need (that) we want to see regional tensions quell,” Singh said when asked about Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin’s call on Wednesday with his Israeli counterpart. “We’ve never wanted to see a wider regional conflict.”
Israel has not directly commented on the attacks, which security sources say were probably carried out by its Mossad spy agency.
The Pentagon was pressed on the potential for a Gaza ceasefire deal amid escalating regional tensions and said Washington did not believe a deal was falling apart. The spokesperson added that the US felt as of now the conflict was contained to Gaza.
President Joe Biden laid out a three phase Gaza ceasefire proposal on May 31. The deal has run into obstacles since.
Critics have urged Washington to use its leverage by conditioning military support to Israel but the US has maintained its support for its ally.
The attacks in Lebanon have raised concerns about the widening of Israel’s war in Gaza that has killed tens of thousands, caused a hunger crisis and led to genocide allegations at the World Court that Israel denies. Israel’s assault on Gaza followed a deadly Oct. 7 attack by Palestinian Islamist group Hamas.

Where We Are Going Today: Uskudar Steak House in Riyadh

Uskudar Steak House promises a luxurious dining experience and, with a focus on high-quality meats, it’s a go-to destination for steak enthusiasts in Riyadh.

The outdoor dining area is instantly inviting, with cozy lighting from small table lamps, lush greenery and palm trees creating a tranquil atmosphere. Rustic wooden decking and decorative wall lighting enhance the intimate, elegant vibe.

You will love their delightful goat cheese salad, a standout starter featuring a refreshing combination of fresh greens and creamy, tangy cheese with perfectly balanced flavors.

For the mains, Uskudar boasts a solid selection of wagyu-based dishes. The wagyu burger is highly recommended — juicy, well-seasoned, and cooked to perfection. Its simplicity allows the quality of the meat to shine through, making it a must-try for burger lovers.

The wagyu spaghetti (marbling 6/7) offers a unique take on pasta, with the richness of the beef adding depth to each bite. The wagyu ribeye (marbling 6/7) doesn’t disappoint either, with its buttery texture and intense flavor, though it might cater more to those with a heartier appetite.

The restaurant’s commitment to quality is reflected in the in-house meat display. A beautifully arranged selection of premium cuts sits elegantly in a glass case, garnished with sprigs of rosemary. In addition, there is a dedicated aging chamber lined with salt blocks, adding a gourmet touch to their wagyu offerings.

Delicious baklawa provides a sweet, satisfying end to the evening. However, while the food hits all the right taste buds, the one let-down is the drink — the sweetness of the beverage is overpowering and slightly overshadows the overall experience.

Uskudar Steak House is a haven for meat lovers and, although it could use some minor tweaks, it is well worth a visit for its top-notch wagyu offerings.

The location is also a plus, with a convenient spot in An Nakheel and plenty of parking available.
