ABU DHABI: The UAE has extradited Italian fugitive Danilo Coppola after his conviction for financial crimes in response to a request from the Italian government, state news agency WAM reported on Thursday.

The decision was made under a bilateral extradition treaty between the UAE and Italy.

On a phone call, UAE Minister of Justice Abdullah bin Sultan Al-Nuaimi and his Italian counterpart Carlo Nordio said the extradition confirmed both countries’ commitment to fostering international cooperation and achieving justice.

“This positive development in our judicial cooperation underlines our shared commitment to ensuring that there is no impunity for those who commit crimes and attempt to evade justice by seeking refuge overseas,” the ministers said in a statement.

According to reports in Italian media, Coppola was arrested in the UAE after an international warrant was issued against him for bankruptcy.

The extradition agreements between both countries aimed to “combat serious and organized crime,” the ministers said.
