  • Team Abu Dhabi’s powerboating world champion targets further glory in partnership with Mansoor Al-Mansoori
  • Lithuania has been a happy hunting ground for the defending champion

LITHUANIA: Rashed Al-Qemzi is aiming for a second successive victory in Lithuania at the weekend to propel Team Abu Dhabi toward a standout triumph in the 2024 UIM F2 World Championship.
Chasing a place in the record books as the first five-time winner of the F2 world driver’s title, powerboating star Al-Qemzi returns to action in Klaipeda in buoyant mood following a win in Norway two weeks ago which gave him the lead in the championship.
With his team-mate, Mansoor Al-Mansoori, up to fourth place in the standings following his second-place finish in Tonsberg, the four-time champion wants the partnership to make this an exceptional season.
“The championship is tougher than ever this year and that gives us extra motivation as a team,” said Al-Qemzi. “After our difficult start in Italy we had the perfect result in Norway, and we want to build on that.
“Mansoor and I work well together and support each other, and we want to keep up the good work in Lithuania and make this an amazing season.”
Lithuania has been a happy hunting ground for the defending champion who has secured three Grand Prix wins there, including last year’s impeccable start-to-finish victory.
Al-Mansoori scored his first Grand Prix victory in Lithuania two years ago to take the lead in the championship and eventually ended the season in third place, which is his minimum target this time.
The Team Abu Dhabi duo know they will have to be at their best in Klaipeda, where the line-up of 20 drivers includes home favorite Edgaras Riabko, who currently trails Al-Qemzi by a single championship point and who will want to give Lithuania something to celebrate.
The third round of the six-event series gets underway on Friday with a free practice session at lunchtime, ahead of the early-evening three-stage qualifying series where Al Qemzi will be looking to claim a second consecutive pole position.
Al-Mansoori’s first target will be to close in on British driver Matthew Palfreyman, who leads him by five points in third place following his opening round victory in Italy and a non-finish in Norway.

  • Newcastle took the lead in spectacular fashion in the 37th minute when Lloyd Kelly pulled the ball back to Harvey Barnes

LONDON: Newcastle beat Tottenham 2-1 while Chelsea suffered fresh frustration after blowing the lead in a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace on Sunday.

At St. James’ Park, Wilson Odobert, Pape Sarr and Pedro Porro all wasted good chances for Tottenham in the early stages.

Newcastle took the lead in spectacular fashion in the 37th minute when Lloyd Kelly pulled the ball back to Harvey Barnes, who unleashed a sublime volley into the far corner from 10 yards.

Tottenham equalized in the 56th minute as Newcastle defender Dan Burn accidentally diverted the ball into his own net while trying to clear after Brennan Johnson’s cross eluded Nick Pope, who had weakly parried James Maddison’s shot in the build-up to the goal.

Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali came on for his first Premier League appearance in over 10 months after his ban for breaching betting rules.

The Magpies went back in front in the 78th minute when Jacob Murphy ran onto Joelinton’s defense-splitting pass and laid on a tap-in for Alexander Isak.

Unbeaten Newcastle’s second win in three league games condemned Tottenham to a first defeat this term, with the north London derby against Arsenal next up after the international break.

Meanwhile, Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea have won only once in the first three league games of the Italian’s reign after a chaotic close-season.

Beaten by Manchester City on the opening weekend, Chelsea powered to a 6-2 win at Wolves last weekend before scraping into the UEFA Conference League group stage after a 2-1 loss at Servette on Thursday.

Former Leicester boss Maresca insists his expensive Chelsea rebuild, featuring a host of new signings, is ahead of schedule despite their inconsistent start.

Jadon Sancho’s loan move from Manchester United was the final piece in Chelsea’s overhaul since last term and the winger was introduced to the crowd before taking his seat in the director’s box next to Blues co-owner Behdad Eghbali.

But Sancho can’t have been impressed by his new team as they failed to kill off Palace after Noni Madueke picked out Cole Palmer and his pass was slotted home by Nicolas Jackson in the 25th minute.

Maresca was furious after Palace midfielder Will Hughes avoided a second yellow card for a foul on Palmer.

Looking for their first point this season after defeats against Brentford and West Ham, Palace made the most of that escape to drew level in the 53rd minute.

England midfielder Eberechi Eze unfurled a superb curling finish that flashed past Chelsea keeper Robert Sanchez from 20 yards.

Eze’s eye-catching goal and a late close-range miss by Jackson ended Chelsea’s run of 14 successive wins against Palace in all competitions.

Mo Salah hints at Liverpool exit after inflicting more misery on United in Premier League rout
  • Salah has less than a year left to run on his contract at Anfield
  • A year ago Liverpool reportedly rejected a bid of £150 million from Al-Ittihad

MANCHESTER: Mohamed Salah hinted this will be his final season at Liverpool after scoring his 15th goal against Manchester United in a resounding 3-0 win for the visitors at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Salah has less than a year left to run on his contract at Anfield and said no discussions have taken place with the club on extending his deal.
The Egyptian has written himself into the record books of the English giants, scoring 214 goals since joining in 2017.
“I had a good summer and had a long time to myself to try to stay positive because as you know it’s my last year at the club,” Salah told Sky Sports.
“I just want to enjoy it and I don’t want to think about it. I feel like I’m free to play football and then we’ll see what happens next year.”
Salah set up two goals for Luis Diaz before extending his record as the top goalscorer in meetings between United and Liverpool by scoring for the seventh consecutive game at Old Trafford.
“To be fair I was coming to the game, it could be the last time (playing at Old Trafford),” he said.
“Nobody in the club has talked to me about contracts. It is not up to me, it is up to the club.”
Salah signed a three-year deal in 2022 that reportedly made him the highest paid player in the club’s history, worth more than £18 million ($24 million) a year.
But he has been consistently linked with a lucrative move to the Saudi Pro League.
A year ago Liverpool reportedly rejected a bid of £150 million from Al-Ittihad.
The 32-year-old is just one of three major Liverpool players out of contract at the end of the season, along with captain Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
However, on the field all is well for the Reds as new manager Arne Slot has made a serene start to the daunting task of replacing Jurgen Klopp.
Liverpool have won their first three Premier League games without conceding to sit behind Manchester City at the top of the table on goals scored.
“It’s a great result. Everyone knows it’s very important for the city and for the fans — and for the manager with his first game in here,” added Salah.
“We’re so happy for the result. If you want to fight for the league this is the sort of game you need to win. I’m glad we managed to win it.
“The manager likes us to press high. We scored from all those situations.
“There’s not a big difference from Jurgen at the start and in time we’ve changed the system a little with the way we play. We’re adapting.”

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc wins Italian Grand Prix as Max Verstappen falters again
  • Huge roars engulfed the stands as Leclerc took the chequered flag for his second win over the season
  • Verstappen finished nearly 38 seconds off the pace in sixth

MONZA, Italy: Charles Leclerc won the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday to delight Ferrari’s massed ranks of fans as Lando Norris again chipped away at struggling champion Max Verstappen’s lead in the Formula One drivers’ standings.
Monegasque Leclerc claimed victory at Monza for the second time after winning in 2019, holding off McLaren pair Oscar Piastri and Norris in a thrilling race in which Verstappen finished nearly 38 seconds off the pace in sixth.
Huge roars engulfed the stands as Leclerc took the chequered flag for his second win over the season, after his own home Monaco GP, after holding out on a set of hard tires he had changed during his one and only pit stop on the 16th lap.
“I thought that the first time would feel like this and the second time wouldn’t feel as special,” said Leclerc as he basked in the cheers of fans who made the track a joyous, noisy sea of red after the race.
“But my god the emotions in the last few laps; Monaco and Monza are the two races I want to win every year and I’ve managed to win them this year. It is so, so special.”
All of Leclerc’s major rivals, apart from teammate Carlos Sainz who ended up finishing fourth ahead of his Ferrari replacement Lewis Hamilton, pitted twice and McLaren were hoping that the Ferrari pair would do the same.
Instead Leclerc managed to keep his tires in good enough condition to stay ahead and in the end finish the race comfortably in front of Piastri, who had taken the race lead early on after an overtake maneuver on Norris which was as daring as it was tactically questionable.
“Not going to lie it hurts a lot. I did a lot of things right today,” said Australian Piastri.
“Happy with the race, the pace I achieved but when you finish second it hurts.”
Briton Norris — who clocked the fastest lap right at the end — will be disappointed by his finish after starting on pole but he managed to chop Verstappen’s championship lead to 62 points with eight races remaining as his Dutch rival’s barren run continued.
“We considered (pitting once) the whole race but it was impossible with our graining. Just disappointed. Ferrari did a better job, so hats off to them,” said Norris.
Verstappen has now failed to win any of the last six GPs after claiming the honors in seven of the first 10, and his and Red Bull’s dominance of F1 looks increasingly in question.
A fourth straight world title looked a near certainty when Verstappen won in Spain back in June, but since then he has only finished on the podium twice.
And his teammate Sergio Perez finishing in eighth meant that McLaren are now only eight points behind Red Bull in the constructor’s standings and look favorites to win it for the first time since 1998.
Argentine rookie Franco Colapinto, who replaced axed Logan Sargeant for Williams following his disastrous showing at the Dutch Grand Prix last weekend, finish in 12th in his F1 debut.
Earlier Leonardo Fornaroli became the first Italian to win the F3 title, the 19-year-old doing so without winning a single race in this year’s championship.
Trident driver Fornaroli overtook Australian Christian Mansell on the final corner of the 10-race season to grab third place and snatch the title from Gabriele Mini by two points.
Gabriel Bortoleto won the F2 race in dramatic fashion after starting last on the grid, cutting Isack Hadjar’s lead at the top of the stands to just 10.5 points with three races remaining in the season.

‘A brilliant addition to the World Snooker Tour’ : Neil Robertson on Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters
  • The 23-time ranking event winner and six-time major champion speaks exclusively to Arab News about snooker’s fourth ‘major’ and expanding the sport across the Middle East

RIYADH: The inaugural Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters snooker tournament being staged in Riyadh has been hailed by one of the world's leading players as a milestone for the sport in the Middle East.

The tournament, which will run until Sept. 7 at the Green Halls venue, is the first ranking event held in the Kingdom, with high-stakes showdowns featuring 144 of the world’s best players.

Billed as “The Battle on the Baize,” the nine-day competition gives participants the opportunity to claim vital ranking points and $3 million (SR11.3 million) in prize money, as well as the chance to win a coveted new WST title in the early stages of the 2024-25 season.

The event also provides the greatest cueists on the planet with a platform to win one of the sport’s “major” championships — the most prestigious titles a player can win in their career.

Since 1977, the UK Championship, Masters, and World Championship have formed snooker’s Triple Crown, reigning as the sport’s three major championships. Now, the Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters has become snooker’s fourth major — a move welcomed by the World Snooker Tour’s biggest names.

Among them is the Australian star Neil Robertson, one of only 11 men to have completed the Triple Crown, and the only player from outside the UK to accomplish this feat to date.

The six-time major winner endorsed the decision Ito launch the event by revealing the positive reaction and reception from the WST players.

“For all sports to evolve, you need to welcome change, and staging a major championship at the start of the new season is brilliant,” said Robertson. “The prize money and ranking points available replicate those on offer at the world championship and as players, we’ve absolutely welcomed this.”

With the major events held in November, January, and April each year, Robertson believes the Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters taking place in early September is a great addition to the tour.

“The Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters is a huge event, and staging it early on in the new season gives everyone a great opportunity to move in the rankings where that’s not usually the case until later in the year. It’s a welcome change of pace,” he said.

“Having a major event here – where the conditions and facilities are as good as they are – I think the fans will see a fantastic brand of snooker that replicates that of the other majors. You usually see the highest quality of snooker during the majors and I’m sure this will be the same over the next week.”

As the pinnacle annual series in snooker, the WST has morphed into a global competition in recent years, expanding from the UK into mainland Europe and Asia. With an international fanbase exceeding 500 million, coverage now includes more than 200 countries, while the 2024-25 season encompasses 21 events, including 13 in the UK and six in China.

For Robertson, the Saudi tournament could well be the start of the sport’s growth, development, and expansion in the Middle East.

Confirmed for the next decade, the event is the result of a commitment by the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Sport, Saudi Arabian Billiards and Snooker Federation, and Matchroom Sport to develop snooker nationally and regionally over the next decade.

The future potential is something that excites the Australian player.

“Usually, you need a flagbearer to get it all started in terms of breaking into new territories,” said Robertson, the most successful player ever from outside the UK with 23 ranking event wins.

“We’ve been everywhere else all around the world, but the Middle East is a market we’ve not really broken through yet, so it’s a great opportunity.

“Saudi Arabia is doing lots of positive things surrounding sport. We’ve seen the opportunities the Kingdom is creating for its population in line with Vision 2030, and by hosting events across football, F1, boxing, esports, and so on.

“Coming here and seeing the practice facilities, the area, and how fantastic everything is set up bodes really well for the future.

“The Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters has created a lot of interest, and it’s really up to us as players now to put on a good show and propel snooker in the Middle East. We’ve come to a place where the facilities and the conditions are perfect to do so.”

  • Commando Group in 2nd place, followed by Sharjah Self-defense Sports Club

DUBAI: MOD UAE took the top spot on the second day of the AJP Tour Dubai International Jiu-Jitsu Championship held at Shabab Al-Ahli Club in Dubai.

Competitions on Saturday featured the youth and masters divisions, with Commando Group taking second place, followed by Sharjah Self-Defense Sports Club in third.

Tiago Vargas, coach of MOD UAE, said the Dubai competition offered athletes a chance to compete, stay sharp, and prepare for the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship.

“Our competitors did well, securing third place on the first day, and winning several medals on the second. We brought as many athletes as possible to make the most of this opportunity.”

Mohammed Salem Al-Dhaheri, vice chairman of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, said that  the championship is a leading international event, attracting top athletes worldwide.

“These championships are also key to developing local talent by offering our athletes the chance to compete against the best,” he said.

This is the second jiu-jitsu event hosted by the Shabab Al-Ahli Club this season, following the Jiu-Jitsu Vice President’s Cup last June.

“Hosting these major international championships at our club is thanks to our strong partnership with the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation,” said Thani Majid bin Sulaiman, the club’s director of combat sports.

“Dubai’s central location makes it an ideal venue. We are proud to hold this event, and work closely with the federation to ensure its success and meet international standards.”

He said the club is committed to developing jiu-jitsu and supporting its athletes.

“We hope they perform well and make it to the podium, as they have put in a lot of effort in their training.”

Mohammed Alghaithi, of MOD UAE, who won gold in the Men’s GI/Brown/Master 2/120kg category, said: “Winning gold today is a significant achievement, especially given the tough competition and high level of talent. It’s a step closer to reaching my goal of earning a black belt.”

The championship will end on Sunday night with competitions in the amateur and professional categories, featuring top athletes from the region and around the world.
