6 masters of calligraphy to celebrate on World Calligraphy Day

Aug. 14 marks World Calligraphy Day. Here, we take a look at six artists who have become masters of the art form.
 

  • Majid Alyousef

    Majid Alyousef is an artist, calligrapher and designer based in Dubai, He has been practicing Arabic calligraphy for more than 30 years.

  • Ruh Al-Alam

    A British artist of Bangladeshi descent, contemporary calligrapher Al-Alam studied design at Central Saint Martins in London and went on to study his craft in Egypt.

  • eL Seed

    A giant in the world of modern Arabic calligraphy, eL Seed recently launched his “Tacapae” project, consisting of olive oil-filled bottles decorated with his distinctive “calligraffiti.”

  • Wissam Shawkat

    Iraqi artist Wissam Shawkat trained as a civil engineer before switching careers and diving into life as a calligraphy artist.

  • Helen Abbas

    On the more affordable end of the spectrum, Dubai-based artist Helen Abbas creates striking works including Quranic verses. She also designs abstract Arabic calligraphy shapes, like the example pictured here.

  • Samir Sayegh

    Sayegh’s art, although based on individual letters or words, has little to do with language or meaning — it is purely aesthetic and captures the viewer with its dynamic forms.
