  • Victory over Japan also earns Pakistan spot in upcoming World Championship, says state media

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan recently defeated Japan 3-0 to clinch the bronze medal at the Asian Men’s U18 Volleyball Championship in Bahrain, state-run Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) said in a report, showcasing the South Asian country’s talent at the grassroots level in the sport.

Bahrain is hosting the 15th Asian U-18 Volleyball Championship which began on July 28 and continued till August 4. The tournament featured 16 teams across Asia who competed for the trophy. After narrowly losing out to China in the semifinal of the tournament last week, Pakistan competed for third place against Japan on Sunday.

“In a dominant display of skill and teamwork, Pakistan triumphed over Japan with a decisive 3-0 victory in the third-place match,” APP said. “The set scores were 25-13, 25-21, and 25-17, showcasing Pakistan’s superior play.”

Pakistan clinched the third spot out of a total of 16 countries including Bahrain, Thailand, Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, China, Taipei, Saudi Arabia, Kazakhstan, Iran, Lebanon, India and others.

“The victory not only brings a bronze medal but also marks a significant milestone for Pakistan volleyball, reflecting the growth and potential of the sport in the country,” the state media reported.

APP credited the “strategic planning and rigorous training regimen” of the coaching staff for the team’s success, saying that it played a crucial role in honing the athletes’ skills and enabling them to perform at their best on the international stage.

“In addition to securing the Bronze Medal, the Pakistan U18 Men’s Volleyball Team has also qualified for the upcoming World Championship,” it said.

Pakistan’s Under-18 squad includes talented players such as Talal Ahmed, Abu Bakar, Muhammad Issam, Muhammad Hassan, Gibran Ajmal, Junaid Muttahed, Ali Shah, Muhammad Junaid, Muhammad Yahya, Muhammad Irfan, Muhammad Nasir, and Khizr Hayat.

Olmo clinches Barca comeback win at Rayo on debut

MADRID: Dani Olmo celebrated his delayed Barcelona debut with a goal to seal a 2-1 comeback victory at Rayo Vallecano in La Liga on Tuesday.

The Spain playmaker’s 82nd-minute strike helped Barcelona claim their third win from three matches under new coach Hansi Flick at the start of the season.

Barca were unable to register Olmo with La Liga after signing him from RB Leipzig until earlier in the day and he made an instant impact after being brought on at Rayo’s Vallecas stadium.

Unai Lopez sent Rayo ahead against a flat Barca in the first half but Olmo came on at the break and energised the Catalans, who levelled through Pedri before the new arrival struck the winner.

Rayo Vallecano, celebrating their centenary year, signed former Real Madrid playmaker James Rodriguez earlier in the week and he watched on from the presidential box as the capital club started strongly.

The hosts attacked with intent and got their reward when Jorge De Frutos drove forward on the right and crossed for Lopez, who finished with a low effort at the near post.

Rayo minimized Barcelona’s threat in the first half except for the odd occasion teenage star Lamine Yamal managed to work his magic.

Flick hooked Ferran Torres at half-time and threw on Olmo for his debut, after he had missed their first two league matches waiting for Barcelona to get their finances in order to complete his registration.

With Olmo entering the fray he took up a central attacking midfield position, with Brazil winger Raphinha restored to the left flank.

The former Barca academy player quickly began to make his mark on proceedings and the Catalans started to generate chances.

Polish veteran Robert Lewandowski should have levelled but could not get a solid touch close to goal on Raphinha’s dangerous cross.

Raphinha whistled a free-kick narrowly wide and Olmo smashed a 30-yard drive against the crossbar.

Barca made the pressure count and Pedri levelled on the hour mark after exchanging passes with Raphinha and sweeping home.

Barca thought they had a second 10 minutes later, when Yamal’s shot was saved and Lewandowski worked room to tuck the rebound home.

However the goal was controversially disallowed after a VAR referral when the referee deemed Jules Kounde guilty of a foul, when he made light contact with Pep Chavarria’s foot in the build-up.

The visitors did not lick their wounds for too long, maintaining the pressure, and Olmo finished with aplomb after Yamal set him up.

Barcelona played with an energy in the second half which has often been missing late in games in recent years, with the team appearing notably fitter under Flick.

The victory guarantees Barca will top the table after the third round of matches, despite various injury issues affecting important players including Gavi, Frenkie de Jong and Ronald Araujo.

Champions Real Madrid visit Las Palmas on Thursday while Atletico Madrid host Espanyol on Wednesday, among other fixtures.

Sinner, Swiatek survive US Open wobbles as Osaka weeps
  • Four of Swiatek’s five Grand Slam titles have come on the red clay of Roland Garros, including her third straight French Open title this year

NEW YORK: Top seeds Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek survived US Open first round wobbles on Tuesday as two-time champion Naomi Osaka made a tearful and colorful return to Flushing Meadows.

Sinner fought back from a set and break down to defeat Mackenzie McDonald in his first match since being embroiled in a doping test controversy.

Fellow world number one and 2022 US Open champion Swiatek saw off 104th-ranked Kamilla Rakhimova but only after having to save three set points in the second set.

Italian Sinner battled to a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 win over his 140th-ranked opponent on Arthur Ashe Stadium, racing away with 18 of the last 22 games.

The 23-year-old was returning to action just a week after it was revealed he had failed two drug tests in March.

However, he escaped a lengthy ban from the sport when officials decided he wasn’t at fault for the presence of banned anabolic agent clostebol in his system.

“I was a little bit not in the best way,” said Sinner of his victory.

“The first match is not easy. He played really well in the beginning so I just tried to stay there mentally and find some rhythm to keep going.”

French Open champion Swiatek, chasing a second New York title to add to her four triumphs in Paris, saw off Russian lucky loser Rakhimova 6-4, 7-6 (8/6) to extend her season-leading record to 54 match wins.

However, it was an unconvincing display by the Pole who committed 41 unforced errors and had to fight off three set points in the second set.

“I try to adapt to the court and feel how it is,” said Swiatek.

“I’ll take it day by day to get more rhythm. It’s the biggest stadium we have and you feel it’s a huge deal.”

Osaka, who missed last year’s tournament after giving birth to her daughter Shai, stunned 10th seed Jelena Ostapenko.

Former world number one Osaka, now ranked 88, came through 6-3, 6-2 for her first top 10 win in four years.

The Japanese star crunched nine aces in her 19 winners and committed just five unforced errors to her opponent’s 21.

Her tennis was as striking as her outfit. Osaka arrived in court with a brightly-colored, giant bow on the back of her jacket and a frilly skirt over her playing dress.

To complete the ensemble, the 26-year-old attached small bows to the heels of both shoes.

“Last year I was watching Coco (Gauff) play and I so badly wanted to step on these courts again,” said a tearful Osaka, a four-time major winner.

“I didn’t know if I could ... just to win this match and just to be in this atmosphere means so much to me.”

Osaka’s fellow tennis mum Caroline Wozniacki, runner-up to Serena Williams 10 years ago, needed just 53 minutes to see off Japan’s Nao Hibino 6-0, 6-1.

Daniil Medvedev, the Russian fifth seed who shattered Novak Djokovic’s dream of a rare calendar Grand Slam by claiming the 2021 US Open, went through with a four-set victory over Dujan Lajovic of Serbia.

Carlos Alcaraz, who won the first of his four Grand Slam titles in New York in 2022, opens the night session on Arthur Ashe Stadium against Australian qualifier Li Tu, the world number 186.

Alcaraz is on a 14-match winning streak in Grand Slam events and is attempting to become the only third man in the modern era to win the French Open, Wimbledon and US Open in the same year after Rod Laver in 1969 and compatriot Rafael Nadal in 2010.

Li, 28, hasn’t won a match on the main tour in 2024.

Elsewhere on Tuesday, 2021 semifinalist Felix Auger-Aliassime, the 19th seed, slipped to a straight-sets loss to Jakub Mensík of the Czech Republic.

Greek 11th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, who has never made the second week at the US Open, was stunned 7-6 (7/5), 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 by Australia’s Thanasi Kokkinakis.

Fourth seed Elena Rybakina, the 2023 Wimbledon champion, enjoyed a 6-1, 7-6 (7/1) win over 194th-ranked Australian qualifier Destanee Aiava.

Stan Wawrinka, the 2016 winner, aims to become the third man in last 50 years to win a main draw match at the tournament at the age of 39 or over after a 40-year-old Jimmy Connors in 1992 and Ken Rosewall — who was 42 when he achieved the feat in 1977.

RIYADH: Al-Hilal announced the signing of Portuguese full back Joao Cancelo on Tuesday as the Saudi champions beef up their defense in a bid to retain their crown.
The 30-year-old joins the Riyadh team from English title holders Manchester City, after the player and the Blues agreed a three-year contract.
Cancelo has not featured much in Pep Guardiola’s side since the 2022-23 season and has had loan spells with Barcelona and Bayern Munchen.
The Portuguese defender will join compatriot Ruben Neves in the Saudi capital as well as Brazilian superstar Neymar, who is battling to get fit after a serious injury sidelined him since October.

  • 35-year-old Shah, son of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home minister Amit Shah, will be the youngest ever ICC chairman

NEW DELHI: India’s Jay Shah will succeed New Zealander Greg Barclay as chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) later this year, the governing body said on Tuesday.

The 35-year-old Shah, son of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home minister Amit Shah, will be the youngest ever ICC chairman when be begins his tenure on Dec. 1.

Barclay decided against seeking a third term and Shah, considered the game’s most influential administrator as the secretary of the world’s richest cricket board, was the sole candidate, the ICC said.

Shah, also president of the Asian Cricket Council, said he was committed to spreading the game, which will return to the Olympics after a gap of 128 years at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

“We stand at a critical juncture where it is increasingly important to balance the coexistence of multiple formats, promote the adoption of advanced technologies, and introduce our marquee events to new global markets,” he said.

  • Shah will take over the role from December, after current Chair Greg Barclay decided not to seek a third term
  • Jay Shah: ‘I am committed to working closely with the ICC team and our member nations to further globalize cricket’

NEW DELHI: India’s cricket chief Jay Shah has been elected unopposed as chairman of the sport’s world body, the International Cricket Council, it said Tuesday.
Shah will take over the role from December, after current Chair Greg Barclay decided not to seek a third term.
“I am committed to working closely with the ICC team and our member nations to further globalize cricket,” Shah said, adding he was “humbled” by the appointment.
“Our goal is to make cricket more inclusive and popular than ever before.”
From being the chief of the world’s richest cricket board to leading the ICC, the 35-year-old’s meteoric rise illustrates India’s domination of the sport’s global administration.
In a country where the sport and politics go hand in glove, Shah is best known for being the son of home minister Amit Shah, the right-hand man of Hindu-nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Shah, the powerful Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India since 2019, becomes the youngest ICC chairman.
Top cricketers in India enjoy superstardom with millions of die-hard fans, most lucrative playing contracts, and endorsement deals not seen anywhere else in global cricket.
By some counts, Indian cricket on average generates more revenue than Bollywood.
More than 90 percent of the sport’s billion-plus worldwide fans are in the Indian subcontinent, according to a 2018 ICC study.
The ICC is the global governing body for cricket, with more than 100 members, and is responsible for staging global events such as the World Cup.
Shah said he wanted to “embrace fresh thinking and innovation to elevate the love for cricket worldwide.”
