LONDON, 7 October 2004 — Tariq ibn Abdul Aziz Al-Homayed has been appointed editor in chief of Asharq Al-Awsat, a sister publication of Arab News.

Prince Faisal ibn Salman, chairman of the Saudi Research & Marketing Group, announced the appointment during the Arabic daily’s staff meeting here yesterday.

Addressing the meeting, Prince Faisal spoke about the progress of Asharq Al-Awsat over the years and its desire to uphold professionalism, credibility and moderation.

“I am proud of Asharq Al-Awsat being the newspaper of all Arabs,” he said and emphasized the need to make use of existing expertise while injecting new blood to ensure a bright future.

Al-Homayed, who worked earlier as the paper’s assistant editor in chief and managing editor for Saudi Arabia, replaced Muhammad Al-Awam, who was acting editor in chief of the daily. Prince Faisal thanked all previous editors in chief of Asharq Al-Awsat who contributed to the shaping of its personality.

Prince Faisal appointed Awam as supervisor of the news center in Riyadh and praised his services while he was acting editor in chief of the Arabic daily.
