  • Reigning Saudi Pro League champions defeated Al-Ahli 4-1 on penalties after 1-1 draw in first semifinal
  • Al-Hilal will face either Al-Nassr or Al-Taawoun in Saturday’s final

ABHA: Al-Hilal reached the final of the Diriyah Saudi Super Cup on Tuesday with 4-1 penalty shootout win over Al-Ahli after their semifinal ended 1-1.

It will be the seventh time that the reigning Saudi Pro League champions have contested the final of the competition, having won the title twice.

Al-Hilal were moments away from elimination, and a first defeat to Al-Ahli in four years, before Serbian forward Aleksandar Mitrovic headed a 90th minute equalizer from Salem Al-Dawsari’s cross to take the match to penalties.

Al-Ahli had taken the lead in the 66th minute through Brazilian captain Roberto Firmino’s first-time left-foot finish from a Riyad Mahrez pinpoint cross.

The shootout saw successful Al-Hilal kicks from Ruben Neves, Al-Dawsari, Mitrovic and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

In contrast, only Firmino converted for Al-Ahli, with Gabri Veiga’s effort brilliantly saved by Yassine Bounou, and Roger Ibanez hitting his effort over the bar.

Al-Hilal will now contest Saturday’s final against the winner of the second semifinal between Al-Nassr and Al-Taawoun on Wednesday.

Defending women’s Tour de France champion Demi Vollering wins time trial and takes overall lead
  • Vollering’s win made it three victories in three stages for Dutch riders as the eight-stage tour started in the Netherlands
  • Vollering leads the race overall standings by three seconds from teammate Wiebes with Dygert in third place after three stages

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands: Defending women’s Tour de France champion Demi Vollering won a short, sharp time trial through the streets of Rotterdam on Tuesday to take the overall leader’s yellow jersey from fellow Dutch rider Charlotte Kool in the third stage of this year’s tour.

Vollering’s win made it three victories in three stages for Dutch riders as the eight-stage tour started in the Netherlands.

Vollering, of the SD Worx-Protime team finished the 6.3-kilometer (3.9-mile) dash over tram rails and bridges in downtown Rotterdam in 7 minutes, 25 seconds. Her victory came hours after Kool beat another Dutch rider Lorena Wiebes on the line in the second stage.

“I’m very surprised. I didn’t see this coming,” Vollering, one of the favorites to win the tour, told Dutch broadcaster NOS.

American Chloe Dygert, who won the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics individual time trial, and a gold on the Olympic track in the team pursuit, finished second behind Vollering in 7:30, narrowly ahead of Loes Adegeest.

Olympic time trial champion Grace Brown of Australia rode a gold-colored bike through the streets of Rotterdam but suffered a puncture, forcing her to swap onto another bike — without the gold paint job — and lose valuable time.

Vollering leads the race overall standings by three seconds from teammate Wiebes with Dygert in third place after three stages.

Earlier Tuesday, Kool, of the DSM-Firmenich PostNL team, made it two wins out of two as she passed Olympic road race silver medalist Marianne Vos then overtook Wiebes just before the finishing line in 1 hour, 32 minutes and 49 seconds. Vos finished third.

“Dreams seem to come true quite fast these days. First yesterday with the win and then to do it again with the team today in the yellow jersey, it is just incredible,” Kool said.

The first of Tuesday’s two stages took the riders 69.7 kilometers (43.3 miles) from Dordrecht to the nearby port city of Rotterdam through a typical Dutch landscape of pancake flat polders, waterside dikes and past World Heritage-listed windmills before ending in downtown Rotterdam.

Kool was wearing the leader’s yellow jersey after winning the opening stage in The Hague on Monday, kept it after her second straight stage win and then had to cede it to Vollering after the time trial.

After starting in the southern Dutch town of Valkenburg on Wednesday, the race heads south into Belgium, finishing in Liege. It then winds through eastern France to finish Aug. 18 at the top of the punishing climb of the Alpe d’Huez’s famous 21 hairpin bends.

  • Sharif: You have doubled the delight of 250 million Pakistanis because we’ll also celebrate our Independence Day tomorrow
  • Pakistan is predominantly known for cricket in the sporting world with the country winning the 1992 World Cup

ISLAMABAD: Olympic javelin gold medalist Arshad Nadeem received a total of 250 million rupees ($897,000) on Tuesday as Pakistan continued to celebrate his record-breaking throw at the Paris Games.

Pakistan’s prime minister, Shehbaz Sharif, announced 150 million rupees ($538,000) for Nadeem at a special ceremony to honor the star athlete in Islamabad. Sharif’s announcement came hours after Punjab’s chief minister Mariam Nawaz visited Nadeem’s house in a village in the Mian Channu district and presented him with a check for 100 million rupees ($359,000).

Nawaz also handed him the keys to a new car which has a special registration number of “PAK 92.97” to commemorate Nadeem’s throw of 92.97 meters at Paris, which was an Olympic record. Nadeem’s coach Salman Iqbal Butt was also given 5 million rupees ($18,000).

“You have doubled the delight of 250 million Pakistanis because we’ll also celebrate our Independence Day tomorrow,” Sharif said while announcing the money for Nadeem, whose father is a daily wage laborer. “Today every Pakistani is happy and the morale of the whole country is sky high.”

“The feeling is very good,” Nadeem said Tuesday. “I hope to stay fit and break the world record one day.”

Last Thursday, Nadeem set off celebrations across Pakistan when his throw easily surpassed the previous Olympic mark of 90.57 set by Andreas Thorkildsen of Norway in 2008. It was also well clear of India’s Neeraj Chopra, the Tokyo champion, who reached a season-best 89.45 for silver.

“Arshad Nadeem has brought unprecedented happiness to the nation,” Nawaz said in a statement.

Nadeem won Pakistan’s first Olympic gold in 40 years, when the men’s field hockey team won at the 1984 Los Angeles Games. Pakistan’s last medal of any color was a field hockey bronze at the 1992 Barcelona Games.

“The heights that parents’ prayers take a person to,” Nawaz said in her post on X, formerly known as Twitter, while sharing a picture with Nadeem and his mother Razia Parveen.

Later Tuesday, Nadeem and his family were flown to Islamabad on a special flight from Multan to attend a reception hosted by Sharif, who paid tribute to the athlete during a cabinet meeting.

“Nadeem has elevated the name of Pakistan worldwide because of his day and night hard work, parents’ prayers, and coach’s training,” Sharif said.

Pakistan is predominantly known for cricket in the sporting world with the country winning the 1992 World Cup.

“Seeing him on the podium waving the flag and ringing the Olympic bell was incredible,” Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood said in the Pakistan Cricket Board’s podcast on Tuesday as he prepares for the test series against Bangladesh, starting Aug. 21 in Rawalpindi.

Pakistan red-ball head coach Jason Gillespie said Nadeem will be invited to the dressing room of the Pakistan cricket team during the first test match.

“Having him visit and share his gold medal with the team would be a fantastic boost, especially with the Olympic spirit still in the air,” Gillespie said. “It was a wonderful moment, and we extend an open invitation for him.”

Nadeem also has a special postage stamp in his honor depicting his record throw.
