Spain beat England 2-1 to win record fourth European Championship title
  • Oyarzabal slid in to poke home Marc Cucurella’s cross, just when the game at Berlin’s Olympiastadion seemed destined for extra time

BERLIN: Spain won a record fourth European Championship title on Sunday after Mikel Oyarzabal’s 86th-minute goal clinched a 2-1 victory over England, whose painful decades-long wait for a major trophy goes on.
Oyarzabal slid in to poke home Marc Cucurella’s cross, just when the game at Berlin’s Olympiastadion seemed destined for extra time after the latest show of resilience by England at the tournament.
Substitute Cole Palmer equalized for England in the 73rd minute to cancel out Nico Williams’ opener in the 47th from 17-year-old prodigy Lamine Yamal’s pass.
Spain also won the title in 1964, 2008 and 2012.
“I did my job and what I had to and was lucky enough to score the goal for the win,” said Oyarzabal, who came on as a substitute for captain Alvaro Morata. “When you are among the 26 names to be picked, that is special enough, but then to get to help the team like I did, that is the most important part.”
England men’s team has now lost back-to-back Euro finals and is still without a major title since winning the 1966 World Cup.
It is another agonizing loss for one of the world’s most underperforming national teams, this one coming in front of Prince William and Spain’s King Felipe at the venue built for the 1936 Olympics.
“This time it just wasn’t meant to be,” the prince wrote on social media. “We’re all still so proud of you.”

There were joyous scenes after the final whistle among the Spanish players, with Williams putting his hands to his face before he was embraced by his teammates. Dani Carvajal slumped to the field and was piled on by jubilant teammates.
Yamal, Marc Cucurella and Dani Olmo were among the first to jump over the advertising hoardings to reach the Spanish fans in the stadium’s east end of the stadium.
It was fitting that Yamal and Williams combined for the crucial first goal as they are the poster boys of this exciting, multicultural team that mirrors the new reality in Spain.
Yamal’s mother is from Equatorial Guinea and his father is from Morocco, while fellow winger Williams has Ghanaian parents who made the long journey to Europe looking for a better life. To make it to Spain, they had to ride on the back of a crowded truck and walk barefoot through the Sahara desert.
“Euphoria! We are so happy. We deserved this,” said Williams, the player of the match. “This is for our fans and our parents, who have supported us throughout.”
Unlike his brother Inaki, who is a Ghana international, Nico chose to play for Spain and will now be regarded as a national hero there.
As, indeed, will Oyarzabal and the rest of the Spain team, who have won all seven of their matches at this tournament — an unprecedented feat — and beaten heavyweights Germany, France and England, back-to-back in the knockout stage.
Spain is back as a major player in senior soccer after winning both the Women’s World Cup and the men’s UEFA Nations League in 2023.
Since 2001, Spanish men’s teams have won 23 consecutive major finals in club and international soccer.

PSG begin post-Mbappe era with 4-1 win at Le Havre
  • It was a comfortable win in the end for Luis Enrique’s team, with their substitutes ultimately making the difference as PSG’s strength in depth proved too much for a team who narrowly avoided relegation
  • PSG have not made any marquee signings to fill the enormous void left by Mbappe, who departed for Madrid in June

LE HAVRE, France: Paris Saint-Germain began their defense of the Ligue 1 title with a 4-1 win at Le Havre on Friday in their first competitive game since the departure of talisman Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid.

Lee Kang-in gave PSG the lead inside three minutes in Normandy only for Gautier Lloris to equalize, but late goals by Ousmane Dembele, Bradley Barcola and a Randal Kolo Muani penalty sealed the victory for the reigning French champions.

It was a comfortable win in the end for Luis Enrique’s team, with their substitutes ultimately making the difference as PSG’s strength in depth proved too much for a team who only just avoided relegation last season.

“It is the first game back and it’s a very good start,” said PSG’s Spanish coach.

The French international trio of Kolo Muani, Dembele and Barcola all began the game on the bench, while Portugal midfielder Joao Neves came on at half-time for his debut after joining from Benfica for a fee that could reach 69.9 million euros ($76.7m) including bonuses.

Yet Le Havre will wonder what might have been had a Josue Casimir goal — which would have put them in front early in the second half — not been disallowed by VAR for a handball.

“We had highs and lows, but the substitutes did a lot of good for us,” added Luis Enrique.

“The final score disguises the fact that there are things to improve upon. We gave away lots of easy balls and had we gone 2-1 down that might have changed everything.”

PSG have not made any marquee signings to fill the enormous void left by Mbappe, who departed for Madrid in June after scoring 44 goals last season and registering a club-record 256 across his seven years at the club.

It remains to be seen if Luis Enrique’s team can repeat their performances of the last campaign, when they swept all the domestic honors and reached the semifinals of the Champions League.

The Spanish coach was without several regulars here, with left-back Nuno Mendes suspended while Fabian Ruiz is not yet ready to return after helping Spain win Euro 2024.

There was a debut on the left wing for Ibrahim Mbaye, who is only 16 and was one of three teenagers in PSG’s starting lineup alongside Yoram Zague and Warren Zaire-Emery, both 18.

South Korea star Lee opened the scoring when he collected a Goncalo Ramos pass on the right wing before sending a shot into the far corner with the aid of a deflection.

However, the visitors were then dealt a blow as Ramos was forced off with an ankle injury, and his replacement Kolo Muani then sent a header crashing back off the bar.

Le Havre, in their first game under new coach Didier Digard, improved as the game went on and Abdoulaye Toure had a goal disallowed for offside just before the half-hour mark.

They were level three minutes into the second half when Lloris, the brother of former France captain Hugo, turned in Christopher Operi’s free-kick.

The hosts then thought they had taken the lead on 53 minutes when skipper Casimir ran through to score, but VAR ruled his effort out after a long check for a handball.

Lee struck the frame of the goal before Dembele, who had been sent on for the final 20 minutes, gave PSG the advantage again on 85 minutes with a header from a Neves cross.

Barcola curled in a superb third a minute later, and Kolo Muani then won and converted the late penalty which wrapped up the win for the visitors at the Stade Oceane.

Last season’s runners-up Monaco face Saint-Etienne on Saturday, while Roberto De Zerbi’s first game in charge of Marseille will be away to Brest, who surprisingly finished third in the last campaign.

Zirkzee an instant hero as Man Utd beat Fulham in Premier League opener

Zirkzee an instant hero as Man Utd beat Fulham in Premier League opener
  • The Dutch international saved the Red Devils from a frustrating evening

MANCHESTER, UK: Joshua Zirkzee made himself a Manchester United hero on his debut with a late winner to beat Fulham 1-0 in the opening match of the Premier League season on Friday.
Zirkzee, lacking match fitness after his £36.5m ($47 million) move from Bologna last month, came on only for the final half hour.
The Dutch international saved the Red Devils from a frustrating evening at Old Trafford when he poked in Alejandro Garnacho’s cross on 87 minutes.
United boss Erik ten Hag survived at the end of last season, despite finishing eighth in the Premier League, thanks to winning the FA Cup.
Whether that shock victory over rivals and English champions Manchester City in May could be a springboard remains to be seen after a performance that was eerily reminiscent of many last season.
Ten Hag said on the eve of the game that his side were “not ready” for the new campaign with key players missing through injury or a lack of match fitness, and it showed.
Bruno Fernandes started in a center-forward role in the absence of Rasmus Hojlund, while Zirkzee was on the bench after returning to pre-season late following Euro 2024.
Noussair Mazraoui was thrown straight into the starting line-up at left-back after joining from Bayern Munich this week.
But there was no place in the squad for Jadon Sancho even though the winger and Ten Hag appeared to have settled their differences.
Fulham won at Old Trafford last season for the first time in 20 years in February during a torrid campaign for United.
Little seemed to have changed in the opening 20 minutes as the visitors started confidently and Andre Onana did well to prevent Kenny Tete’s dipping effort finding the top corner.
But Fulham were nearly masters of their own downfall.
Casemiro pounced on Bernd Leno’s sloppy pass and teed up Fernandes, who could only fire straight at Fulham’s German goalkeeper.
Casemiro’s struggles played a large part in United’s problems last season, but the Brazilian started the new campaign more like his old self.
An incisive through ball from the former Real Madrid midfielder created another brilliant chance for Fernandes, who again could not beat Leno from close range.
United’s lack of a predatory striker continued to haunt them after the break as Leno spread himself brilliantly to this time deny Mason Mount a rare goal since his move from Chelsea just over a year ago.
Ten Hag turned to Garnacho and Zirkzee from the bench in the search of a winner.
In doing so United left themselves open and Fulham could have secured another famous three points at the Theatre of Dreams.
Andreas Pereira’s poor pass cost Alex Iwobi the chance to run clean through on goal.
Moments later Lisandro Martinez produced a goal-saving clearance from Pereira’s dangerous low cross.
Instead it was the home side that snatched all three points.
Garnacho’s ball from the right was not the best, but Zirkzee managed to get a toe on it to divert it beyond Leno into the far corner.
United should have had a second in stoppage time when Garnacho somehow skewed wide with an open goal to aim at from Marcus Rashford’s unselfish pass.
But United held on to give Ten Hag the winning start he badly needed.

Man City hit with Rodri injury setback ahead of Chelsea opener
  • While England trio Phil Foden, John Stones and Kyle Walker hope to feature at Stamford Bridge
  • Rodri’s absence is an early blow to City’s bid to win a fifth successive Premier League title

LONDON: Manchester City will be without Rodri for the start of their Premier League title defense after Pep Guardiola revealed the Spain midfielder has been ruled out of Sunday’s opener against Chelsea.
The influential 28-year-old has only just returned to training after being forced off at half-time during Spain’s 2-1 win against England in last month’s Euro 2024 final.
While England trio Phil Foden, John Stones and Kyle Walker hope to feature at Stamford Bridge after their post-Euros break, Rodri has not been cleared to return to action.
Asked on Friday if Rodri could be involved against Chelsea, Guardiola told reporters: “No chance.
“He is in training. I don’t know, I haven’t seen him yet. He feels good. We’ll have to see how he feels after training.”
Rodri’s absence is an early blow to City’s bid to win a fifth successive Premier League title.
City would love to make a strong start to their title defense in west London, but Guardiola admitted fitness issues could hamper them on the opening weekend.
Foden, Stones and Walker are not fully fit after only returning to training in midweek following their holidays.
“I’m pretty sure they won’t be ready for 90 minutes, maybe yes, maybe 15 minutes,” Guardiola said.
“The important thing is everybody is back and except for Oscar (Bobb) the rest are OK.”
Bobb will have surgery on Friday to repair a fractured bone in his leg following a non-contact training ground incident on Wednesday.
Guardiola expects the young Norway winger to be sidelined for up to four months.
“Unfortunately, he had a big impact and got injured,” Guardiola said. “He is having surgery this afternoon.
“Hopefully, it will go well and he will be back in three or four months. We are so sad for him.”
Bobb’s setback follows the recent departure of Argentina forward Julian Alvarez to Atletico Madrid and Guardiola said he could be forced into the transfer market for replacements.
“Maybe or maybe not, we will see,” the Spaniard said. “I’m really pleased with the squad I have, we will see. I’m set.
“We will see what happens in the market. We can continue to January in that way or maybe we will add some players.”

Conor Gallagher back at Chelsea and waiting for ‘solution’ to tie up $42.5M move to Atletico Madrid
  • Gallagher has had to go back to Chelsea without tying up the deal
  • Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca said Friday that Gallagher is back in London, “training a little bit apart”

LONDON: England midfielder Conor Gallagher has returned to Chelsea and is training alone at the club after issues arose in completing his move to Atletico Madrid.
Atletico posted a message on social-media platform X, formerly Twitter, last Saturday with a picture of Gallagher at Wanda Metropolitano stadium, saying he was there to “finalize his transfer” for a reported 33 million pounds ($42.5 million).
However, Gallagher has had to go back to Chelsea without tying up the deal, reportedly because of the collapse of an agreement that would have seen Atletico striker Samu Omorodion move in the opposite direction.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca said Friday that Gallagher is back in London, “training a little bit apart” and will not be involved in the team’s opening Premier League game against Manchester City on Sunday.
“He is trying to find a solution with (the) club,” Maresca said.
“Hopefully, for Conor, this situation is going to finish where the player, the club, the manager, all the people involved are happy.”
Gallagher was Chelsea’s vice-captain last season and played for England at the recent European Championship.
