Mbappe and Alonso big winners at inaugural Globe Soccer Europe Awards
  • ‘I want to work hard to keep my name in history of football — there’s lots still to do; I’m far from what I want to achieve,’ says Mbappe
  • The awards recognize European football excellence, both on and off the field

SARDINIA: PSG striker Kylian Mbappe, Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso and FC Barcelona star Lamine Yamal were among the winners at the inaugural King Abdullah Financial District Globe Soccer Awards Europe.
Tuesday’s ceremony at Hotel Cala di Volpe in Costa Smeralda, Sardinia, marked the first European edition of the awards, which have been held in Dubai for the past 14 years.
With shortlists for five of the 10-plus honors decided by a fan vote earlier this month, a star-studded jury of football luminaries selected the final winners. The awards recognize European football excellence, both on and off the field.
Industry representatives and players past and present attended this week’s event, including FC Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski, three-time Champions League winner Fernando Morientes, former England manager Fabio Capello and the coach of the current Italian national side, Luciano Spalletti.
Mbappe, whose contract with his Parisian club expires at the end of June, took to the stage amid loud applause to collect the KAFD Best Player award.
“It’s an honor to be here — I see some great players, managers, legends. It’s always great to see everybody recognize your game. I want to thank my club; I know my president is here,” said the French striker.
“It’s always a pleasure to be a part of this event. It is part of my journey. I want to work hard to keep my name in the history of football. There is a lot still to do and I am far away from what I want to achieve, but I will start this summer with the Euros.”
The star’s moment in the spotlight came minutes after Alonso, who led his Leverkusen side to an undefeated domestic double and the final of the Europa League, received Best Coach from Pedro Proenca, president of Liga Portugal.
“It has been a real pleasure to see old colleagues and friends here tonight in this beautiful setting,” said Alonso. “I’m proud to receive this award, not just for myself but for all Bayer Leverkusen. What we have lived this year has been phenomenal, a fantastic journey. It felt special since the beginning, all the connections we created with the fans, the players, the staff. We’ve been able to have a dream season.”
The Emerging Player award was won by FC Barcelona’s 16-year-old winger Yamal, who scored five goals and notched up eight assists in 37 La Liga appearances this season. Xavier Puig, the Barcelona director responsible for women’s football, collected the Best Women’s Club award on behalf of FC Barcelona Femeni. Manchester City CEO Ferran Soriano received Best Men’s Club on behalf of the UK Premier League champions.
All five winners — Mbappe, Alonso, Yamal, FC Barcelona and Manchester City — also received a gold “Road to Dubai” medal from His Excellency Saeed Hareb, secretary general of Dubai Sports Council, confirming their qualification for the year-ending Dubai Globe Soccer Awards which will take place this winter in the UAE.
Other Globe Soccer winners included Atalanta, who received the Revelation Award after winning the Europa League and qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League, and Nasser Al-Khelaifi, chairman of the European Clubs Association and president of PSG, who collected the Football Leadership Award. Cesc Fabregas accepted the Comeback Award on behalf of Como after his Lombardy side was promoted to Serie A for the first time in 21 years, and Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta received Best Coach Premier League from former Gunner Fabregas after leading his swashbuckling side to within just two points of the title.
A host of career awards were also distributed during the evening, with Spalletti and Gianluigi Buffon both collecting a coach and player award respectively, while Karl-Heinz Rummenigge collected a Special Career Award recognizing his work with Bayern Munich, formerly as CEO and now as a member of the club’s supervisory board. A posthumous Special Career Award was also given to Italian striker Gigi Riva, who died earlier this year at the age of 79. It was collected by his son, Nicola.
“It has been a long journey to reach this point, but I am extremely proud to see the European football industry come out to recognize and celebrate the continent’s top-performing protagonists,” said Tommaso Bendoni, founder and CEO of Globe Soccer.
“When we created the Dubai Globe Soccer Awards 14 years ago, we had an ambitious vision that is now coming to fruition. It is testament to the growing reputation of the Globe Soccer brand that we have attracted so many of European football’s biggest names to join us for this historic event in Costa Smeralda.”
Shortly before the KAFD Globe Soccer Awards Europe, the first in-person, end-of-season La Liga Awards took place, with Spanish football celebrating a thrilling 2023-24 season.
Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham won Best Player after an incredible debut season in which the Englishman netted 19 goals and laid on six assists in only 28 games. Yamal won Best U23 Player and Jesus Areso of Osasuna won Best Goal for his strike from close to the corner flag against Getafe. Best Coach was won by Michel after he oversaw Girona climb from 10th to third in just 12 months.

Bento looks to take UAE’s recent form into 26th Arabian Gulf Cup in Kuwait

Bento looks to take UAE’s recent form into 26th Arabian Gulf Cup in Kuwait
  • The Portuguese’s tenure saw an uplifting turnaround in November with emphatic World Cup qualifying victories

DUBAI: Arabian Gulf Cups have become a source of acute anguish for UAE head coaches.

Past glories, stellar reputations or World Cup qualifying progress have been no shield to their ruinous effects.

Shock defeat to Oman in the 23rd event’s showpiece in 2018 provided an unfulfilling start to Alberto Zaccheroni’s reign. Beaten World Cup 2010 finalist Bert van Marwijk was dismissed in the wake of Group A elimination by Qatar in 2019 and Rodolfo Arruabarrena was wounded through 2023’s Group B exit in bottom spot, despite being one of few big hitters to send a full-strength squad.

Such pitfalls awaited current incumbent Paulo Bento on Thursday upon arrival in Kuwait alongside his intriguing, and much-debated, selection for this winter’s 26th running.

The Portuguese’s tenure experienced an uplifting turnaround in November with emphatic World Cup 2026 qualifying victories against Kyrgyzstan and familiar-foes Qatar — whom they open against in Group A on Saturday at Sulaibikhat Stadium.

Arabian Gulf Cup glory is always vital for an ambitious nation keen to add to victories in 2007 and 2013. The true target, however, must be to maintain momentum ahead of March’s resumption of the greater quest to make North America’s grand event.

“In my opinion, we should separate both things,” Bento pragmatically responded on Abu Dhabi Sports when quizzed about the relationship between these twin aims. “This is a competition (Arabian Gulf Cup) that has its own schedule.

“I would say it is a specific competition. But, it cannot have any kind of influence on what we are going to do in March (World Cup 2026 qualifying’s resumption).”

The ex-Portugal and South Korea tactician will soon discover whether this demarcation is plausible, or fanciful.

Eyebrows were raised by a roster that failed to contain Al-Wasl golden boy Ali Saleh and Al-Ain’s AFC Champions League winning center-back Khalid Al-Hashemi. Renewed zest fueled by record goal scorer Ali Mabkhout’s bountiful summer switch to Al-Nasr has not sparked a recall, despite a glaring lack of center forward options.

Surprise also followed a debut call-up for unheralded naturalized midfielder Solomon Sosu, who has played one minute in ADNOC Pro League this term for Al-Ain. Full-back Faris Khalil has not even entered the top-flight fray this season for fallen holders Wasl, yet is in Kuwait.

Bento has made these decisive calls from a position of strength that seemed impossible after a deflating October, which contained one point from two third-round qualifiers.

He also now has rapid Al-Wahda center-back Lucas Pimenta available for selection. The impressive Brazil-born defender could form one of the continent’s great pairings with dominant Al-Ain defender Kouame Auton as the Whites’ naturalization drive shows no signs of abating.

Bento might want to “separate” Arabian Gulf Cup and World Cup targets, but there will be lessons to learn in Kuwait.

A testing Group A contains a Qatar that have picked a full-strength squad for this event under new boss Luis Garcia, contrary to 2023’s experimental selection. The likes of record 2019 Asian Cup top scorer Almoez Ali and double AFC Player of the Year recipient Akram Afif will, surely, be determined to avenge last month’s consequential 5-0 humbling in Abu Dhabi.

Hosts Kuwait have an entire nation behind them, while their fellow World Cup 2026 third-round competitors Oman are much improved under Rashid Jaber’s stewardship.

“It’s going to be tough, due to many aspects,” said Bento. “They (Group A opponents) have their own goals, as well.

“The first game is going to be difficult (against Qatar) and tough for sure. It will not be easy to win again, after winning two times (in World Cup 2026 qualifying).

“For now, we should think about the first game. Then, step by step, analyze and recover the players, checking the best options for the next games.”

Break out of a demanding Group A, and a collision course could be set for Iraq and Saudi Arabia.

The former come into this competition as reigning champions, plus red-hot favorites to make World Cup 2026. Scheduling for this tournament has been kind, meaning many of their foreign-based stars are available for selection because of winter breaks.

Rare uncertainty surrounds a Saudi Arabia that claimed only one point last month from the returning Herve Renard’s opening pair of World Cup 2026 qualifiers. The Frenchman will be without Roma right-back Saud Abdulhamid, plus Beerschot loanees Faisal Al-Ghamdi and Marwan Al-Sahafi.

Fitness doubts also continue to swirl around Al-Hilal talisman Salem Al-Dawsari.

The challenge will be stiff in this hotly contested regional tournament. However, ample reasons for UAE optimism exist.

A strong run in Kuwait can only bolster belief within Bento’s squad, no matter his understandable attempts to calm expectations — and worrying implications if the reverse occurs.

The Whites sit a tantalizing third in Group A of World Cup 2026 qualifying’s third round, just three points behind second-placed Uzbekistan. This is well within striking distance of automatic entry bequeathed by a top-two finish, with four games remaining.

Contrasting tests await in March at perennial qualifiers Iran and bottom-placed North Korea. Bento’s men must come through those examinations in good health, if dreams of a second-ever World Cup spot are to become real.

The competitive Portuguese will embrace any triumph at 26th Arabian Gulf Cup, as will the country. Mahdi Ali and Bruno Metsu are rightly lionized for this century’s cherished regional wins with the UAE.

Bento is, however, fully aware that his tenure will only truly be judged a success by attaining global aspirations. It is the exclusive club of World Cup qualifiers populated by Mario Zagallo alone that he must enter.

Inter Milan reach Italian Cup quarterfinals after Asllani scores direct from corner kick
  • Marko Arnautovic and Kristjan Asllani netted in the first half to help Inter set up a quarterfinal match against Lazio
  • Teenage defender Mike Aidoo came on two minutes from time for Inter for his professional debut

MILAN: A much-changed Inter Milan side eased to a 2-0 victory over Udinese in the Italian Cup on Thursday.

Marko Arnautovic and Kristjan Asllani netted in the first half to help Inter set up a quarterfinal match against Lazio — the team they routed 6-0 in the league on Monday. Inter coach Simone Inzaghi made eight changes to that side.

The match was briefly halted shortly before halftime when a spectator collapsed in the stands. The fan was immediately treated as the stadium fell into silence and the players looked on, clearly concerned.

A defibrillator had to be used before the fan was carried out on a stretcher to the applause of the San Siro crowd. The fan was reportedly stable in the hospital.

When play resumed after a delay of more than five minutes, the Udinese players still seemed distracted as Asllani’s corner from the left evaded everyone and went in off the far post.

That put Inter 2-0 up as it had broken the deadlock in the 30th minute following an Udinese error. A hideous pass from visiting midfielder Jurgen Ekkelenkamp was straight at Mehdi Taremi and he fed in Arnautovic, who slotted into the bottom right corner.

Taremi hit the post in the second half, while Inter also had an early penalty revoked on review.

Teenage defender Mike Aidoo came on two minutes from time for Inter for his professional debut.

Guiu hat trick helps Chelsea rout Rovers 5-1 to extend Conference League dominance
  • Guiu, who joined Chelsea from Barcelona this summer, has scored six goals in six games in the third-tier competition
  • Rolando Mandragora netted for Fiorentina three minutes from time to salvage a 1-1 draw at Vitoria

LONDON: Marc Guiu’s first-half hat trick helped Chelsea ease past Shamrock Rovers 5-1 on Thursday to complete the league phase of the UEFA Conference League with a 100 percent record.

The 18-year-old forward, who netted twice in a 3-1 win over Astana in the previous round, opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a header from close range at Stamford Bridge.

Markus Poom equalized for the Irish visitors, but Guiu restored Chelsea’s lead with an angled shot from the left in the 34th.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall made it 3-1 six minutes later before Guiu completed his first hat trick for the Blues with a header in stoppage time.

“I’ve never seen anyone press like him,” Dewsbury-Hall told TNTSports about Guiu. “He doesn’t slow down, he’ll keep working hard. You forget how young he is. He’s only 18. I’m happy that he got his hat trick, he deserves it.”

Guiu, who joined Chelsea from Barcelona this summer, has scored six goals in six games in the third-tier competition.

Marc Cucurella finished off the rout in the second half.

It’s now eight straight wins in all competitions for Enzo Maresca’s team, which equals the club’s record set in December 2016.

Of the 36 clubs involved in the revamped competition, the top eight in the standings go directly to the round of 16 in March. Teams ranked ninth to 24th go into the knockout playoffs in February. The bottom 12 teams are eliminated.

Unlike the new-look Champions League and Europa League, teams in the Conference League face six opponents, not eight, in the league phase that replaced the traditional group stage.

Chelsea was the only team that stayed perfect, the only team that qualified to the round of 16 with a game to spare, and it scored 26 in six games, by far the most goals.

Despite its first defeat in the competition, Rovers finished 10th and became the first Irish club to advance to the knockout stage of a European competition.

Top eight

Rolando Mandragora netted for Fiorentina three minutes from time to salvage a 1-1 draw at Vitoria, a result that gave the Portuguese team second place with 14 points. Fiorentina, runner-up in the previous two editions, was a point back in third.

Rapid Vienna beat Copenhagen 3-0 to advance from fourth place on 13 points. Djurgarden was fifth with 13 points after a 3-1 win over Legia Warsaw, which was seventh place.

Lugano finished sixth after being held 2-2 at home by Pafos from Cyprus.

Cercle Brugge’s 1-1 draw against Basaksehir was enough to finish eighth.

Sharjah shine again as UAE Pro League takes break ahead of Gulf Cup start

Sharjah shine again as UAE Pro League takes break ahead of Gulf Cup start
  • Cosmin Olaroiu’s team lead the table after 10 rounds as reigning champions Al-Wasl struggle

DUBAI: A lull in play for the 26th Arabian Gulf Cup provides an opportune moment to assess a burgeoning 2024-25 ADNOC Pro League.

Superstar signings, such as Shabab Al-Ahli Dubai Club’s Sardar Azmoun, and surprise packages — leaders Sharjah were nowhere close to being pre-season title favorites — have lit up the opening 10 rounds.

We have also seen holders Al-Wasl afflicted by the usual champions’ curse, while there has been mixed fortunes for promoted Al-Orooba and Dibba Al-Hisn.

Before an upwardly mobile UAE under Paulo Bento begin their regional campaign in Kuwait this weekend, here is a chance to reflect on domestic matters.

King out to reclaim the crown

We should have known not to discount serial trophy hoarder Cosmin Olaroiu.

A dismal 2023-24, following an unprecedented quartet of silverware the campaign prior, featured a distant fourth-placed finish for fractious Sharjah and no realistic shots at further success.

This time, the team known as The King is living up to its ostentatious moniker. Rejuvenated attackers Firas Ben Larbi and Caio — with a remarkable 11 goal contributions in 10 run-outs — have helped produce a defiant 27-point tally from the opening 30 available, with strength of character being shown by a perfect response to Oct. 27’s 2-1 defeat at a raucous Rashid Stadium for the summit clash with Paulo Sousa’s Shabab Al-Ahli.

Olaroiu has lifted 19 trophies during 17 stellar years across Asian football. Criticism weathered last term has, seemingly, increased focus at an unfancied club whose unpretentious pre-season business was highlighted by Brazil Under-23 prospect Guilherme Biro, unheralded ex-Croatia youth midfielder Darko Nejasmic and Dutch journeyman forward Tyrone Conraad filling the void left by an underwhelming Moussa Marega.

Star-studded Shabab Al-Ahli lead chasing pack

There was no lack of glamour, however, in second-placed Shabab Al-Ahli’s preparations.

Manager Sousa was one of the 1990’s most-celebrated midfielders. Powerhouse Iran centre forward Azmoun arrived on the back of Bundesliga glory at Bayer Leverkusen and has staked a strong claim to be last summer’s standout addition.

Resident stars already included UAE flyers Yahya Al-Ghassani and Harib Abdalla, plus ex-Crystal Palace stalwart midfielder Luka Milivojevic. A perfect return of 18 points from the opening six games hinted at a title procession, but things are kept interesting by recent draws with seventh-placed dark-horses Kalba and mid-table Khor Fakkan.

Joy in an epic Emaar Super Cup against sorry Wasl, and salt thrown on the same opponents’ wounds four-days later in one-sided 3-0 top-flight triumph, shows the pedigree of a team who can narrow the lead to an uncomfortable one point with victory in their game in hand.

Elsewhere, sleeping giants Al-Nasr have built on significant 2023/24 momentum gained under Alfred Schreuder to sit third on 19 points. Evergreen veterans Adel Taarabt and Ali Mabkhout — dramatically recruited to positive effect from boyhood club Al-Jazira — head their charge.

Anything could happen at fourth-placed Al-Wahda after this week’s stunning call to dispense with ex-Celtic, New York City FC and Club Brugge manager Ronny Deila. Neighbors Jazira in sixth will hope to see more from France playmaker Nabil Fekir, if he can get clear of injury worries.

Fifth-placed Al-Ain, meanwhile, are enduring an abject defence of their AFC Champions League crown, yet could go on a top-flight charge now Shabab Al-Ahli’s 2022/23 title-winning tactician Leonardo Jardim is at the helm and one of UAE football’s leading hitmen is roaring back to his best.

Never count out Kodjo

Kodjo Fo-Doh Laba was an afterthought when Al-Ain stunned the continent.

With manager Hernan Crespo gone by October, he is now experiencing one of the great league campaigns. The Togo center forward’s pacesetting 14 strikes are coming at a breakneck average of one every 43.7 minutes.

This imposing tally has included smashing through the 100-goal ADNOC Pro League barrier with an opening round hat-trick versus Khor Fakkan, while also usurping Ghana megastar Asamoah Gyan.

Such merciless excellence has thrust him into a bracket of his own this season. This is despite the bravura campaigns being undertaken by electric Iran attacker Mehdi Ghayedi at Kalba, Sharjah’s impactful Caio and a refreshed Mabkhout hitting the heights once more expected of the UAE, and its top flight’s, record scorer.

Tough at the top for Wasl

It has been a campaign of contrast for defending double-winners Al-Wasl.

Serene progress to AFC Champions League Elite’s knockout stages contrasted with a penalty shootout defeat in a Super Cup temporarily lit up by midfielder Nicolas Gimenez’s back-heel volleyed Puskas Award contender. Plus, finding themselves in the mid-table mire from eighth along with the likes of Ajman, Khor Fakkan and Baniyas.

Dejected manager Milos Milojevic virtually ceded the title after this week’s defeat to Shabab Al-Ahli. This is no shock after the runaway champions degenerated into a frustrated side with only three league wins, plus a draining five draws from six run-outs in all competitions from Oct. 26-Dec. 2.

The wait for the UAE’s next back-to-back league winner will stretch past a 12th year.

Can Dibba Al-Hisn end promoted pain?

It was a foregone conclusion throughout the entirety of last term that promoted Emirates Club and Hatta would be relegated.

Orooba have gone from First Division League winners, to bottom spot. But, there are signs of fight this time from Dibba Al-Hisn.

Hulking four-goal Tunisia striker Haithem Jouini, experienced compatriot Oussama Haddadi and three-goal Midana Cassama have shown fight.

They prepare for January’s restart outside the drop zone, albeit only by one point and one place. Several near misses since October’s hire of head coach Hassan Al-Abdooli have cost them greater security.

Dembele nets 2 and Donnarumma injured as PSG beat Monaco to increase French league lead
  • Ousmane Dembele scored a brace and striker Goncalo Ramos put PSG back in the lead with seven minutes left as he headed in a corner
  • The match was brought forward because of a scheduling conflict with the Trophee des Champions between the two clubs on Jan. 5 in Doha

MONACO: Runaway leaders Paris Saint-Germain opened a 10-point lead at the top of the French league standings before the yearend break with a 4-2 defeat of Monaco on Wednesday in a match marred by Gianluigi Donnarumma’s injury.

Ousmane Dembele scored a brace and striker Goncalo Ramos put PSG back in the lead with seven minutes left as he headed in a corner after coming in as a substitute in the lively encounter at the Stade Louis II.

Monaco remained in third place, level on points with second-place Marseille, who have one match in hand.

Donnarumma’s face was bloodied after being hit by an opponent’s cleat. The Italy international took the studs of Wilfried Singo’s cleat in the 17th minute. Singo, whose shot had been blocked, tried to jump over the sliding Donnarumma but instead struck his face.

Pictures showed that Donnarumma was cut below his right eye. Singo, who had already been warned, was lucky to avoid a red card.

Donnarumma was left lying on the pitch while receiving treatment. He finally stood up and walked away to be replaced by Matvey Safonov.

Desire Doue had put PSG in front in the first half before Eliesse Ben Seghir leveled from the penalty spot after the interval and Breel Embolo gave Monaco the lead at the hour mark.

Dembele then scored his first goal of the evening from a rebound in the 64th minute. He added more luster to PSG’s win deep in stoppage time when he completed his brace.

The match was brought forward because of a scheduling conflict with the Trophee des Champions between the two clubs on Jan. 5 in Doha during the weekend that the French league resumes.
