  • Ambassador Michael Ratney welcomes hundreds of Saudi guests to space-themed Riyadh reception

RIYADH: The US Embassy in Riyadh celebrated the 248th anniversary of Independence Day on Thursday with a reception hosted by US Ambassador Michael Ratney.

The ambassador welcomed guest of honor Prince Faisal bin Abdulaziz bin Ayyaf, Riyadh Region mayor, along with Saudi officials, and hundreds of Saudi guests, as well as visitors from Washington, including members of the US Congress.

The space-themed Independence Day reception served as a symbolic celebration of the future of the US-Saudi cooperation in space, highlighting the profound benefits and possibilities of space exploration, research, and commercial development.

Ratney said the theme reflects the “shared ambition of the United States and Saudi Arabia to embrace opportunities in space, positioning both countries as pioneers in this frontier of innovation.”

The event evoked nostalgia for past achievements, such as the 1969 moon landing, while emphasizing ongoing advancements in space sciences, particularly commercial space exploration.

Ratney highlighted Saudi pioneers in space travel, such as Prince Sultan bin Salman, and astronauts Rayyanah Barnawi and Ali Al-Qarni.

An art installation, “Museum of the Moon,” by artist Luke Jerram, featured NASA’s high-definition imagery of the lunar surface.

According to the US Embassy’s statement, the collaboration between the US and Saudi Arabia continues to advance shared interests in diplomacy, commerce, culture, and more.

The US remains dedicated to enhancing shared US-Saudi shared interests in security and in fostering prosperity in the region, while also exploring new avenues for partnerships in areas such as the arts, education, entertainment, and tourism, it said.

Both countries are poised to explore further cooperation, including potential joint ventures in space, reflecting a vision for an even stronger US-Saudi relationship in the future, the statement added.

RIYADH: The Imam Abdulaziz bin Mohammed Royal Reserve Development Authority has banned hunting as a part of ongoing efforts to safeguard the Kingdom’s environment and wildlife, particularly species facing extinction.

The authority oversees the Imam Abdulaziz bin Mohammed and King Khalid royal reserves, where the ban comes into force.

The authority works to maintain ecological balance, preserve biodiversity, and mitigate the negative impacts of poaching, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Monday.

By forbidding hunting, the reserves can ensure that wildlife can prosper within the protected areas.

The authority will take legal action against violators to protect the Kingdom’s natural resources, the SPA reported.

Monitoring teams will intensify field patrols, utilizing advanced technology in cooperation with other authorities.

Since the beginning of 2024, the authority’s teams have recorded 290 environmental violations in the two reserves. These cases have been taken up under environmental legislation.

  • Fund financed 230 projects in 71 countries in the transportation sector

RIYADH: Exceeding a total cost of $20 billion, the Saudi Fund for Development has financed 800 projects in more than 100 countries over the last 50 years, according to a top official.

Saudi Minister of Tourism Ahmed Al-Khateeb revealed that the institution has financed 77 health projects that resulted in 325 medical facilities in 45 countries with a capacity of more than 25,000 beds. Most notable of the initiatives was King Faisal Hospital in Rwanda, which carried out the first kidney transplant in the country.

He was speaking during a ceremony held by the fund to mark the 50th anniversary of its establishment in the capital, Riyadh.

Al-Khateeb, who is also the chairman of the fund’s board of directors, said SFD funded 84 education projects to establish 600 academic facilities benefiting more than 1 million students, according to a statement.

This falls in line with the fund’s vision to be a comprehensive strategic partner that advances the sustainable economic development of the world’s least developed countries.

It also aligns with its mission to empower the stable economic development of countries in need by leveraging the Kingdom’s resources to provide financial, technical, and human support to meet the needs of its partners.

During his speech, the minister said the fund also financed 230 projects in 71 countries in the transportation sector, including airports, roads, and ports.

These initiatives include the Velana International Airport in the Maldives, initially established in 1978, along with its expansion project to boost capacity from 2 million to 8 million passengers, and King Fahd Road in Djibouti. Additionally, the fund has financed 230 oil projects in more than 70 countries.
