Ryadh bin Mohammed Alkhareif was recently appointed deputy chair of the International Monetary and Financial Committee of the International Monetary Fund by Minister of Finance Mohammed Al-Jadaan.
Alkhareif began his time at the IMF as an adviser to the executive director in Washington D.C. in 2016 before taking on the role of alternate executive director the following year. In turn, he is a member of the executive board, which is the policy and decision-making body of the IMF.
The board is responsible for conducting the day-to-day business of the IMF, including the approval of all lending operations, the review and approval of policies, and the completion of the Article IV surveillance exercise with each member country.
Alkhareif has more than 15 years of experience in the economic field through his work at the IMF and the Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority, now known as Saudi Central Bank, where he began his career.
Prior to joining the fund, Alkhareif was head of the studies division at the authority. He first joined as an economic researcher in 2004 and became an economic specialist in 2013 before achieving the head of studies division position. In that role, he was responsible for running SAMA’s main macroeconomic models.
Alkhareif has published multiple papers in peer-reviewed journals and co-authored the book “Advances in Monetary Policy Design” with William Barnett, a pioneer of the Divisia monetary indexes.
He represented Saudi Arabia at the G20 Framework Working Group from 2016 to 2019. He also contributed to the formulation of the FWG Priorities under Saudi Arabia’s G20 Presidency.
He is a member of Harvard Business School’s Leadership in Financial Organizations, the Society for Economic Measurement in the US, and the Saudi Economic Association. In 2014, he received the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting in Economic Sciences Young Researcher Award.
Alkhareif earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and management from King Saud University in 2004. He later received a double master’s degree in economics from both the University of Oregon and the University of Kansas, and a PhD in economics from the University of Kansas in 2013.
He received extensive training at State Street Global Advisors, participated in the High Potentials Leadership Program and Leadership in Financial Organization Program at Harvard Business School, and took part in other executive programs at MIT.
