LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Sunday announced a reorganized national selection committee comprising seven members, months before the start of the T20 World Cup 2024.
The selection committee will be comprising former cricketers Mohammad Yousuf, Wahab Riaz, Abdul Razzaq and Asad Shafiq, according to PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi.
The team would also include head coach and captain of the national team as well as data analyst.
“There will be no chairman of the selection committee,” Naqvi said at a press conference in Lahore. “They [committee members] will be making decisions on the basis of majority.”
The same selection committee will work for the Under 19 cricket, according to the PCB chairman.
The development takes place after Friday’s meeting between Naqvi and former chief selector Riaz at the PCB headquarters in Lahore.
Naqvi stressed the importance of selecting players on merit during the meeting, the PCB said in a statement, after Riaz presented a detailed report to the PCB chairman regarding the performance of various players in the recently concluded Pakistan Super League (PSL).
The PCB said the new selection committee would make independent decisions on selecting a team on merit. “The new selection committee’s decisions on merit would be in front of everyone to see,” it concluded.
Pakistan will play their first match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in Dallas against hosts United States before taking on arch-rivals India in a big-ticket clash in New York.
The South Asian team will play league matches against Ireland and Canada as well. The final of the tournament is scheduled to take place on June 29 in Bridgetown.
